Good restaurant near Milan Malpensa?

Hi! On our last night of our upcoming trip to Germany and Italy we will be staying at the Holiday Inn at Malpensa airport (glamorous, I know, but we have a really early morning flight and free hotel points). Can anybody recommend a good mid-range restaurant near there? Something walkable, or a 5-10 min cab ride would be best. We love little mom-and-pop places that feel cozy and more authentic than touristy. Thanks!

I have not dined here but it gets rather good reports:

I stayed at this Holiday Inn and have a recommendation for you. Within walking distance from this hotel there is a small neighborhood. As you exit the hotel front paved area take a left (if you take a right you are heading towards the airport). Walk about 3 minutes to the end of the road and take another left. Walk about 3 minutes and you will come to a store on your left hand side. Annex to the store is a Momma & Poppa restaurant. I believe they open at 6pm for dinner. GREAT FOOD! This neighborhood is been gradually developed by big interests into top chain hotels. A bit sad to see old homes and even the local church being taken over. People were lovely and it was funny to see most of the hotel guests having dinner at this restaurant (one of two rest. within walking distance; the other was closed). By the way, the breakfast buffet at this hotel was fabulous. I paid $65/double at this hotel; free shuttle to the Terminal, great deal.

Viajero2,

Do you have a street address or name for this restaurant as I am in Milan over Christmas and staying near the airport but not at Holiday Inn ( at the Novotel).

Thanks
Liz

I'll go home tonight and look at the receipts for the name to get back to you. This place was a "Momma & Poppa" and consequently, the food was heavenly delicious :-D

lizjc-- the name of the restaurant is SAMARCANDA and it is located on 25 Via Gustavo Moreno, about 10-minute walk from the Holiday Inn Express Malpensa Airport. It is adjacent to the Agricultural Cooperative store for the (remaining) farmers in the area. If you Google maps the hotel you should be able to "cyberwalk" to the restaurant and get familiar with the street. The other restaurant in that neighborhood is in the Hotel Cervo-- kitty-corner with Via Gustavo Moreno.

Thanks a lot V2, we are at the Novotel in Cardano al Campo but I will check it out on google maps. We can always take a taxi if it is really too far to walk.

Thanks again

I was there in October 2011. The food is amazing...absolutely amazing. Small hole in the wall restaurant that specializes in ALL pizza's but I did have and my mouth still waters from thought of a desert they served: It was figs in a zabaione sauce...OMGGGGGGG THE BEST EVER!!!!!! We went there both nights we were staying at that holiday inn express as it was in the airport property and was a convenient 4 minute walk to the restaurant. I dream of that food served in that restaurant! NOTHING else in the area except for one other restaurant that I had no desire to walk to after eating at Samarcanda.....AAAAA+++++++++++
