I wonder where that would be -- the 16th or the 7th?
I think you have some ideas about being a student at the Sorbonne that are not necessarily true -- such as that all classes are at the one main, old building at place de la Sorbonne. They aren't, and the Sorbonne owns many buildings around the city, and she may have classes at a lot of different places. When I went there one summer, I had one class in a small townhouse not far from the Sorbonne (near St Severin church), the majority in a building they own on bd Raspail in the 14th, and one in the 13th arrondisement near Nationale metro stop.
So I wouldn't be renting or buying an apt. based on it being within walking distance of place de la Sorbonne unless you know something definite about that (most students don't have the luxury of having an apt. in such expensive areas, anyway).

My god, Christina, you've revealed the big surprise that was in store -- almost none of the classes are in the area of the Sorbonne. It was going to be so much fun for them to find out for themselves!

I have been trying to get a reply from the Sorbonne as to exactly where the classes are scheduled. The course she is taking is the Cours de Civilization, which is not the standard Sorbonne degree program, so it was our understanding that most of the classes 2-3 different ones, would be in or near the main building.
Anyway, I would still feel better knowing that they were in a secure area with alot of foot traffic (ie: tourists, students) as opposed to somewhere out in residential areas where everything is dead at night. These are not college juniors as in many study abroad programs, but, high school graduates.
I don't know everything- but at least I have first-hand experience, as my parents sent me alone to London and Paris for a year at age 17! I lived a very basic existance, would not want to put my daughters through that.
We are way off topic here- I just wanted to get a r/e agent to help me look!

I guess the safest and nicest area for me would be the 16th probably, but of course if people want to live right in the center of Paris... You guys can still try this website if you want to find good real estate agents who speak English :http://www.marcfoujols.com/en/buy.htm
