Good novel about Prague?
What novels would folks recommend before a trip to Prague to get one in the mood? Doesn't have to be full of facts or details, but interesting and an enjoyable read a must! I'd love to hear what you enjoyed! What about "Prague" by Arthur Phillips?
Thanks! |
The Castle by Kafka.
|
I second The Castle, and after you have enjoyed that "The Trial".
|
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (you might want to rent the movie, too), or just about anything by Milan Kundera.
|
"Prague" is not really about Prague. It is about expats living in Budapest who WISH they were living in Prague. Thus, not the best for getting true Prague vibes.
I second the suggestion of "Unbearable Lightness of Being", or other Kundera, Kafka, etc. I have a few great mystery/fiction novels about spies, espionage, etc. that take place in Prague, but they are old & no longer published. You could also browse Ebay for interesting books. Happy reading! (and happy Prague travels!!..) |

Just found this post and will be in Prague next month. Any additional recos for books or movies? |
Some of The Amazing Adventures Of Cavalier and Clay takes place in Prague

While not as serious or deep as Kafka or TULOB, I enjoyed 'Prague: A Traveler's Literary Companion' by Paul Wilson - collection of 23 short stories by various Czech writers.
|
Kolya is a wonderful film set in Prague. It won an Oscar for best foreign film a few years ago. The subway scene will prepare you for the depth of the Prague subway system.

Utz, by Bruce Chatwin, is in interesting story about a man's obsession with Meissen porcelain and his attempts to prevent his collection from being confiscated by Communist authorities in post-WWII Prague. |
marktynernyc - that sounds more of my speed!
Thanks for the recommendations! |
