Check out Hotel Fita (www.fita.nl). It's in the Museum neighborhood, near Vongle Park and an easy tram ride to anywhere.

Last summer we stayed at the Canal House Hotel in the Jordaan area (west of the city center). Their URL is http://www.canalhouse.nl/. The hotel is above your price range, but you may find another hotel or B&B in that area.

We loved the neigborhood for many reasons: it is relatively quiet (compared to the hustle and bustle of other areas); in our opinion the canals in this area are the most picturesque; it is the neighborhood of the Anne Frank House and the Westerkirk; there are many restaurants and boutiques; and it's easy to get to other areas of Amsterdam, either on foot or by canal boat.

Another vote for the Canal House in the Jordaan. Lots of charm and lovely cafes, beautiful restaurants and quaint shops in the neighborhood. Very romantic, indeed!
