We walked by Chez Papa in the 14th - how do you get in there? People were jammed into the place and spilling out on the sidewalk (this was in the evening). It's probably a local hangout as well as a restaurant...

The best technique is to get into a Chez Papa is to get there early, as they do not take reservations. Otherwise you might have to wait as long as 30 minutes. People don't really hang around too long after they've finished their coffee, because of the psychological pressure of the waiting crowd. (You can scratch 'Chez Papa' off your list of appropriate places for romantic evenings.)

It looked like a neighborhood "party" atmosphere, very casual..had heard about the 'giant' salads...maybe we'll go there mid-day sometime.
Have read mixed reports about Chez Papa in the 7th, however. (sometimes this is listed as "Espace Sud").. |
By the way, if someone is looking for low-priced (cheap!) eats, I'm becoming a fan of those Asian 'traiteur/deli' places. You point, they heat, and the food is very tasty. Certainly not a dining "experience" but great for quick lunch or offset to the splurge meal.

The Greek/Turkish places will also provide a mountain of food on a plate for about 6 euros. And for real french fry fanatics, they give portions about 8 times bigger than McDonalds for the same price.

My mistake above, I read the OP's request for medium to low-priced restaurants with excellent food.
I didn't realize we were going to veer off into places whose claim to fame is that they super-size. Do the Greek and Turkish places have paper napkins along with the mountains of food? For us snooty people, THAT's allegedly the deal breaker. Of course some of the best food in my life has been at places in the US at the shore, where they give you fresh seafood and fries and hot bicuits and sweet corn. Paper napkins all around, not to mention, bibs! |
Elaine, Yes, those wonderful beachside restaurants! Napkins? What napkins? Usually just a roll of paper towels set on the table (on the Gulf Coast).

I know I am not the most Budget minded person when it comes to shopping or eating ( I try, it just never seems to happen!) but in my experience in Paris dining, the Latin Quarter and the Marais have the most restaurants where one can find clean and tasty food and not break the bank.
I guess Chinese food in a paper take-out carton is OK? BTW- lad has already returned from his trip to Paris . |

The standard measure in France for low and medium priced meals is :
low price is up to 15 € medium price is 16 to 50 € Does anyone else wish to give useful information to the guy who wears pajamas on the plane? He may come back to Paris some day. |

Michael-Paris......Very good posting but I do hope you don't mind my adding.
1. Most all Paris restaurants(even with Michelin stars)) will serve tap water. Just ask for un carafe d'eau. No need for bottled unless your choice. 2. Most all "formule" lunch and dinners do not include coffee. |

I'm still working on my trip report from a few weeks ago but a couple of the places we really enjoyed were:
Fish - rue de Seine Pasco - 74 boulevard de la Tour Maubourg PÈRES ET FILLES - 81 rue de Seine All were under 100 euro for 2 with wine. |
We had a great meal and a wonderful evening at Chez Rene'. This was about 10 years ago now, but I see a poster above has also mentioned the same restaurant.
