Good hotels in London which are in a good location
 

We will be staying in London for 3 nights before we fly to Venice for a cruise. we have never been to Europe and would like to stay in a hotel that is not too expensive but is in a good location.

What's your defintion of not too expensive Donna? Right now everything in London is expensive b/c of the exchange rate.

The best way to get the most for your hotel dollar in London is by bidding on Priceline. Select a 4* or better in Mayfair, Kensington, Westminster or Bloomsbury. Do a lot of research on www.biddingfortravel.com before bidding. You'll get a lot of tips for bidding and see what hotels others have gotten.

If there are just 2 of you, your best option is to bid on Priceline. Read up on how it works at betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com

There is a bit of trick to being able to bid with a non US address but it can be done. Read the FAQ.

There were some specials last year on the Holiday Inn Mayfair on their website. This is a very well located hotel.

At the current exchange rate, you're looking at ~80GBP/night which could be a challenge but not impossible.

What's your budget? And what's a "good location?"

If I didn't want to do a lot of research and shopping around, I'd go for the unit standard accommodation at the Days Inn Waterloo. It's modern, clean, not small by UK standards, and right across the street from the Imperial War Museum. You can walk to the Tube in 5 minutes and be at Picadilly Circus in 5 more.

£63.75 right now, and well worth a lot more.

Donna, The Travel Inn County Hall is a modern budget property in a fantastic location for tourists. Last time I checked prices were in the range of 82GBP.

I agree with the others that if it's just 2 of you that Priceline can't be beat for nicer properties at lower prices.

As others have mentioned, you may even be able to win a 5* on Priceline in Mayfair with that budget. Have won the Meridien Piccadilly several times (and it comes up the most often)- it is perfect and centrally located in the heart of the theatre district and Piccadilly Circus.

Hi Donna, you may wish to check out BAHolidays.com - just remember to change your country code in the upper right as it defaults to the UK. I've booked a 4* hotel from Canada at about 50% off the rate I've seen on major vacation sites like Expedia, Travelocity, Hotels.com, etc. Have fun!

I second the Travel Inn County Hall recommendation - stayed there this past spring.

Great location - right next to the London Eye and about a 5 min. walk to the Waterloo tube station.

Rooms were modern but nothing fancy. Bathroom large and spotless. Rates were around 82 GBP per night, but fluctuated slightly, depending on the day of the week.

I would definitely stay there again, but if you go through Priceline, you probably can get a better deal on a comparable hotel in a different area.

I booked my hotel via pricline (with the help of biddingfortravel) and got the Thistle Charing Cross hotel for $100/night - 4-star hotel. I normally book my own hotels (usually 2-star) but since London is very expensive, I felt priceline was the best way to go. I'm very happy with what I got, especially since it's in an excellent location.

Cordova House Hotel - it's about 2 blocks from Paddington Station

Bayswater is a very quiet area, close to the Underground and right across from Hyde park.ITs not to close to any sights but with the Underground its great...The Hotels there seem to be a lot less Expen$ive that the most I have seen

Lordy: When you say you are looking for a room at under $150 per night, is that in Australian or US Dollars? If the former, you may have some difficulties.

I agree with the other posters who suggest using Priceline. Try to figure out what area of London you want to stay in and then do your bidding research on one of the sites that Kayb95 or mclaurie recommend. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum Hotel in November for $69 per night. Hotel is paid for in advance and there weren't any British taxes or anything to worry about. Good Luck!

We stayed in the Melia White House about a year and a half ago and really enjoyed it. We got a great price online, and the rooms were nicely decorated and well-kept if a bit small. The bar also had some nice snacks if I remember correctly...

I second Days Inn London Waterloo. It was a great buy, and there's an advantage to getting on the tube at Lambeth north rather than Waterloo. At lambeth you will get to sit down!!

The Hilton Olympia is a bit of a hike from the nearest tube station (High Street Kensington.)

Lordy: why did you pick out the Olympia Hilton? Is it offered by your cruise line or maybe you have Hilton points? It is not in a convenient area and you can do a lot better - even using points..

The blurb on the Hilton Olympia website is a classic tourism industry truth stretcher:

To Lordy, I stayed at Hilton Olympia this past April, the ONLY reason was the deal(45 pounds B&B).

As previous posts, the location is too far out from majoy tourist sights and tube stations. But bus#9 goes to Trafalgar Square, and if you are coming from Heathrow, it is easy to get off tube at Hammersmith,then bus#9,#10 takes about 10 minutes to the hotel.

The room was not as nice as other London Hiltons I have stayed; but the buffet breakfast was the best among them.

However, I wouldn't recommend it to any new visitor. For sightseeing/theatre, I think Trafalgar Square area is the most convenient. In that area, I have stayed at Thistle Trafalgar Square, Thistle Charing Cross and Thistle Royal Horse Guards, all are quite good. Usually you could find good deal(about 70-90 pounds incluing breakfast)from www.Londontown.com.
