Good hotel in Montalcino or Montepulciano?

Looking for a good hotel in Montalcino or Montepulciano to stay at one night driving from Rome to Siena (under $150 US). Thanks.

In Montalcino, try the Hotel Residence Montalcino. Great views, nice rooms, good restaurant, decent price within your budget. They even have a place to park your car if you inform them ahead of time. Go to www.itwg.com, type in the city name, and you should see this hotel's contact info.

Stayed in Montalcino last sept.. we had reservations at resd. Montalcino but when we arrived, we found that it wasn't in town at all.

So we canceled our resv. $40 fee billed to credit card and we found a great hotel right in town for $90..There are a few good restaurants and cafes. Our room had a great view too. I can't remember the name but it was next to the elementry school one block from the main street and down the road from the hospital..sorry... but it's worth searching for.

Karen, Try the Albergo Il Giglio in Montalcino for the real thing. Also, look at Hotel Posta Marcucci in Bagno Vignoni--it is right off of S-2 as you drive north and a very nice spa hotel.
BTW, take S-2 north from near Orvieto.

Can't give you personal experience (we stayed in Pienza) but this site was very helpful.http://www.castellobanfi.com/montal_stay.html

I don't want to question John's data, but I'm going to. The Hotel Residence Montalcino is definitely in town, within the old walls, on the side of a hill that gives you a wonderful view out across the Tuscan hills. I was just there last summer, so I know they haven't moved the hotel. Perhaps John is confused or couldn't find the right hotel. It isn't easy to find, but it's right down the hillside about a block or two from the lovely old church with the tall tower.
