Good Flamenco in Seville

We will be spending 4 nights in Seville and would like to see a Flamenco show. I've been warned that some are too touristy, and would prefer something more authentic.

Any recs for good options? Will we need to get tickets in advance (we'll be there mid-October).

Thanks.

You might also search in previous posts for this information. I seem to recall some good recommendations -- that I must look up for our coming trip to Seville.

IMO the best place to see flamenco in Seville is at La Casa de la Memoria - a very intimate venue with usually two shows per night at reasonable hours and for a reasonable price (@22 euros as I recall from our stay there about 2 years ago). Be sure and get there early to be at the head of the line for seats as it is first come, first served, with only about 2 -3 rows of chairs in a U shape around the stage. We went two nights in a row when we were there, and swore we'd go every night if we ever returned...which we are in May '15! They have different performers every night.
Other places were more "night-clubby", involving alcohol and typically late Spanish hours. We liked the ambience and timing of C de la M far better.

Ps we did not have tickets in advance as I recall but bought them at the box office earlier in the day, although advance tickets might not be a bad idea. Check their website, www.casadelamemoria.es.

there is a flamenco festival every two years in Seville, you will probably miss it as it ends the beginning of Oct. 2014

SevillaFlamenco.com is a site that explains the different venues for seeing flamenco performances.

As said, Casa de la Memoria is a good place for an intro to genuine flamenco, and so is Casa del Flamenco. Both are intimate venues where only top class artists perform. Many of them will recently have performed during the Bienal de Flamenco, the largest and most prestigious flamenco festival in the world. The Bienal ends on Oct 5 (goes on from Sept 12).

Pastora Galvan from Sevilla often dances at Casa de la Memoria. She stages her latest performance in the huge Maestranza theater during this years Bienal. Voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2SBUcrJgeQ

El Junco often dances at La Casa del Flamenco. Just brilliant: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sENoCuTQYPs

I'm sorry to hijack but we are going to Spain and Portugal next Oct/Nov and would like to see a flamenco show also. Could any of you who have been recommend the proper attire for the show. Thank you.

el13207 Jul 31st, 2014 01:46 PM

At Casa de la Memoria it was very casual - jeans, nice slacks, whatever. Of course the performers looked fabulous!

michele_d Jul 31st, 2014 02:25 PM

Oh, thank you. We do not bring dressy clothes but really want to attend a performance. Thank you!!

<the proper attire for the show>

I'm far from a fashion critics, but at the major flamenco performances in theaters, local people tend to dress up quite a bit, not in flamenco costumes, but with a flamenco/bohemian "edge". Many look stunning. But casual is also always fine.

The schedule for most major flamenco performances in theaters is updated here: http://www.deflamenco.com/seccion-conciertos.html

I will be sure to bring medium dress up, something lightweight that won't take up much room. Don't want to under dress either, but I will leave my ballgown at home! Thanks

I ended up booking La Casa del Flamenco over Casa de la Memoria, primarily because I was able to order their tickets online, in advance (we are going in mid-Oct). I am looking forward to seeing this show, and can't wait to see Sevilla! I also booked some tours with Sevilla Walking Tours.

Sure you will have an excellent night at La Casa del Flamenco. Alberto Sellés and Luisa Palicio are two of the more famous regulars there.
