We'll be in Edinburgh at the beginning of August- busy time- and I'd love suggestions ffor good food their.I live in the SFO bay area and we eat very well here- but I know they do elsewhere as well!! Please help out with suggestions-anyone?

try Martin's .. exceptional food, wine , and really lovely couple , and very knowledgible about food , wine and scotch, one of the few places I've been where good red wines are decanted after opening, and they do open it in your prescense! In Rose Lane off North St , hard to find ,take a taxi , or get good directions from your hotel, lovely surroundings, just 1 block back from Price's st. <BR>If Cullen skink ( a soup) or the lemon polenta cake with apple crumble and homemade ice creanm is on ,or any kind of duck, from starter to main course order it.

Barb, <BR>In our two visits to Edinburgh our favorite restaurant was Suruchi on Nicolson Street across from the Festival Theatre. Not only the best Indian food we've ever had but great service and atmosphere also.

Both the above suggestions are good. But for a special occassion try to eat at the Witchery. It is right at the foot of the Castle and can be superb. Pricey and you need to book for evening - but sometimes can walk right in at lunch time.

barb: Here's another enthusiastic vote for Martin's. Also try the Atrium - also excellent food, wine and terrific service - and, more casual, Est!Est!Est! at the west end of George Street. If you want to go to the Witchery for dinner,I suggest you book long before you leave home. I'm getting hungry just thinking about them!

I went especially to check out the Witchery and I think it hugely overpriced for the food. Great wine list tho. <BR> <BR>Try the Marque and the Marque Central. The Siam Erewan for Thai. The Kalpna for Indian.

barb-- <BR> <BR>here's a vote for stac polly, on dublin street abt 4 blocks from princes st. i had the grilled salmon there a couple weeks ago and was in heaven--excellent balance of flavors, and everything was cooked to just the right degree. an american expat recommended the haggis starter, which was wrapped in filo and dressed w/ a plum sauce, and my mother devoured it. blv it or not, i also recommend the green salad--a simple thing not on the menu, but one of the most thoughtful treatments of green salad i've seen. all these i'd give 5 stars. one less star for the duck entree and the passion fruit cheesecake dessert. anyway, stac polly seems very popular among locals for special occasions, so u shd probably make reservations.

I lived there for a year, and loved to eat at The Witchery. If you are going to the Military Tattoo performance, it is the best place to book for dinner before the show....because it is about 20 paces from the entrance to the castle esplanade where the show is. Also, be sure to book. Know that there are TWO dining rooms. Ask to eat in the Garden...I think that one has the most ambiance! Have fun. Edinburgh is absolutely fantastic, and especially in August!

We recommend TiAmo's. It was the best dinner of our 2 week vacation. My husband still raves about the Sea Bass and the mullels he had there. <BR> <BR>Have fun!

We have been living in Edinburgh for the past 6 months, we are also from the SF area and food in Scotland is not a highlight, for an elegant, pricey and delicious meal I would recommend The Tower on the roof of the Scotland Museum. I also recommend Fishers in the City. I hesitate to mention our favorite because it's a very small neighborhood place, mainly seafood. It's called Sweet Melindas in an area called Marchmont. Reservations are almost always required.

We were in Scotland in May and spend several days in Edinburgh. We ate at the Wichery and were very disappointed. Maybe we happened to catch the cook on a bad day. We ordered the Lobster (very tough) and had a Ceasar Salas (not good at all). But others have recommended it so... One place we came across and enjoyed was an authentic Italian restaurant called Bellini's. The food was great and there was Italian opera music playing in the background. Another place we happened onto was a french restaurant called Jacques. It was also very good. We felt that both were resonably priced as well. Have a great time! We sure did.

<BR>We went to Fishers in the City (in Thistle Street) which was outstanding. If you like fish, seafood etc, then I can highly recommend a visit. Its best to phone and book in advance if you can.

When in Scotland be sure to try a local speciality - a deep fried Mars Bar! Not very healthy but delicious.
