Good Day trips from Vienna?
We'll be in Vienna for 5 nights and would like to make a day trip or 2. We really wanted to go to Salzburg but now think it might be too far for just a day trip (??) Are there other nice day trips you could recommend that are accessible by train (we will not have our own car)? Thanks! Tom

not really a day trip, but don't overlook Schonbrunn Palace (sp?) outside of Vienna... after touring the Palace relax in their beautiful gardens!

I would suggest the small Hungarian city of Sopron - just over the border, and only about a75 minute ride by train from Vienna. The center of the city is quite very old, still intact, with a few small museums, nice squares, etc.

You could do Schonbrunn (?), the Vienna Woods and around Krems (wine-growing region) in a day with a car. You might take an hour train ride to Bratislava, Slovakia--can get nice crystal, dolls, jewelry, etc. less expensive and has a few sites to see.

Think about Budapest. It's an easy day trip and certainly one of the up and comers in Eastern Europe.

I agree with Richard. Melk! We went by train in the morning, visited the spectacular monastery, had a delightful lunch at an outdoor cafe on the main street and caught the boat back on the Danube. I would suggest getting off before the end, however, and taking the train back the last part of the way, as the river nears Vienna it is far less scenic and interesting. If you have a Eurrail pass, the whole trip including the boat is free, or at least it was when we did it.
