Good day trip from London
 

We will be in London 5 days. I was thinking it might be nice to get out of the city one day or even overnight. I really don't have any criteria. There will be 6 of us, including 2 teenage girls. Thanks

A fairly long, but interesting, day is the train to Cardiff and Caerphilly.

You can also visit Bath, Brighton, Oxford, Cirencester, Stratford-on-Avon or Cambridge.

Hello panucci. We loved Bath, Stonehenge, Windsor, Blenheim Palace, and an overnight in the Cotswolds would be nice.

I also love Winchester. Haven't read the previous posts, but I took a guided "roof" tour of the cathedral, which went up through and on top of the bell tower, along the nave roof (inside and out). Great views of the city from up there. It was well worth the 2 pounds. There is also an interesting museum of the city of Winchester on one of the main streets.

If you are in London for 5 days, that's reasonably adequate for seeing many of the city's major sights, but hardly enough time to venture out of the city extensively. (Unless, of course, your group has been to London before and already seen the major sights).

A daytrip is tempting, I know. In that light, there are many such trips closer to London such as Hampton Court, Richmond, Kew Gardens, Windsor/Eton, Greenwich--all are 20-40 minutes by rail. Bath, Cambridge, Winchester, etc. require substantially longer travel time, making it a bit more of a hurdle to squeeze into your overall trip.

Paucci, you posted your question just after I posted mine and it looks like we are coming to the same conclusion. Winchester it is. Unfortunately I started humming "Winchester Cathedral" and I can't get it out of my head..........

i loved cambridge...way more than hampton court. and it's an easy day trip.

My daughter and I loved Hampton Court. Take the tours led by the costumed guides (included in the price of your entry). With teenagers, I think Oxford might be inspiring!

We took a day tour to Stonehenge/Bath with Evans Evans bus tour company and enjoyed it very much. They have an internet site and the buses leave primarily from the Victoria Coach Station. marilynh
