Good Cheap Eats in Bayswater?
 

Looking for some personal recommendations for<BR>good food near the Bayswater/Queensway tube<BR>stations. We like Indian, Chinese, fish and chips and would like some pub choices, too.<BR>Have Cheap Eats book but need some current feedback. Thanks. Sonya

Sonya--Stayed in the Bayswater area last June and found the area loaded with cheap places to eat(for London). Queensway(street) is loaded with ethnic food places, chinese, indian and moroccan. We had some of the best dim sum at a chinese place(never did see the name) that was just north of the Queensway Tube in a very plain room that was crowded locals. For Indian food we ate at Khan's which is on Porchester Gardens(turn left from Queensway) and it was fantastic, inexpensive and crowded with locals. In fact we ate there twice we liked it so much. Thank you to Doug and CB. The chowhound site has loads of good information and I<BR>will post a question there, too. I had put Khan's on the possible list because of recommendations in several books but it's nice to know of a recent pleasant experience.

We liked Royal China on Queensway and<BR>Helepi's (Greek). The Swan pub is close<BR>too.

Thank you and please keep those suggestions coming. I have been scouring the Boards for recommendations and have noted several for the Stockpot<BR>and Pret chains. Is there a branch of these close by?

I am topping since we will be staying in this area in January and I would like<BR>information on this, too.

Sonya--Did not notice a Pret's or a Stockpot in the area, but there are a couple of Grocery stores that sell fresh sandwiches and crisps. The Swan Pub(located a block west from Lancaster Gate tube on Bayswater Road) is a fun place, with good ale and sing-alongs at night. We did not eat, but many people were eating grub when we were there and it did look good. Happy Travels, CB

I don't remember the name of the restaurant, but there is a Chinese restaurant on Queensway that has an inexpensive buffet...Whiteley's Mall has an indoor food court, but I didn't eat there...there's also a McDonalds on Queensway...there's also a wonderful pastry shop with tables in the back where you can have sandwiches (panini style), dessert, and tea...it's also on Queensway, but I can't remember the name.

Thanks again CB! Would you mind 1 more<BR>query? Did you happen to notice if The<BR>Swan had a family room for children?<BR>Mine are 12-16 and since we would be there in December we need an inside eating area, hopefully smoke-free.

Merilee--Is the pastry shop the one by the Bayswater Tube? The one there did have fantastic tarts and croissants. Didn't try their sandwiches but will have to on my next trip.<BR><BR>Sonya--At the Swan Pub did not notice a non smoking area, nor did I in any Pub. There is plenty of seating inside and the large room in the back is where they have the sing-alongs except Sunday nights. I seem to remember that there were some families with kids present(eating I believe) but not too sure as I had a very good a time with song and ale. <BR> Happy Travels, CB

I would second the motion for Royal China on Queensway. Their dim sum is cheap and great but lines on Sunday can be very long so go another day. We also liked Tawana on the corner of Westbourne Grove and Queensway, it is Thai. Happy trails.

Hi CB...the pastry shop was across the street from Whitely's Mall (on the same side of the street)...there's a grocery store on the corner, then an indoor newsstand, a souvenir shop, and then the pastry shop...the tube stop was another block down by the ice skating rink.

Hi Merilee--That's the shop!! We had bought sandwiches at the corner grocery, then went to the Bakery for dessert and my companion mentioned that we could have gotten our sandwiches there as well.<BR>To xxx-- Royal China does sound like the place where we had our dim sum. It was good, cheap and crowded The place was very stark and bare but I remember a big Red Chinese Flag as main decoration. Is that the place? <BR> Thanks, Happy Travels, CB

Yup CB, that would be Royal China at<BR>13 Queensway, dim sum served from about<BR>12-5 m-sat for around a tenner. We liked<BR>Mandarin Kitchen, too but try to eat dinner at both before 8 as after that time they get really busy and even with<BR>reservations you will wait. The food is<BR>worth it though. Cheap and good. Happy Trails.

Khan's was good food & good prices. It was also loud & crowded, but it didn't bother us.

Just to say I've now seen several recommendations for Khan's here and elsewhere.
