A Nervous Splendor: Vienna 1888-1889 by Frederic Morton has a lot about Crown Prince Rudolph as well as others who lived in Vienna at the time.

I'm bookmarking, too, as I love reading about European royalty.

And if you ever make it to Innsbruck, be sure to see the 28 (yes 28!) MAGNIFICENT larger than life bronze statues of Emperor Maximillian and his relatives and ancestors in the main church there. Also lots of historical info and a great museum tour. And of course Innsbruck is worth a trip in itself!

Stu, no worries at all! Your posts are always helpful.

Chris I agree - so many books...

Thank you for all the good tips. On the list... I haven't been to Innsbruck yet either.

For Catherine de Medici, Juana la Loca & Isabella read CW Gortner. For Eleanor of Aquitaine & her family read Sharon Kay Penman's wonderful historical novels.

I'll chime in with a new book read after travels in Spain: Isabella the Warrior Queen, by Michael Meyer.* I do enjoy history including biographical works. So some other recent ones to mention from the past several years:
Goya, by Robert Hughes;*
Mona Lisa:a Life Discovered, by Dianna Hales;
Roger Williams and the Creation of the American Soul, by John Barry;
Redeemer, by Randall Balmer (on Jimmy Carter;
The Forgotten Founding Father, by Joshua Kendall (on Noah Webster);
The Great Agnostic, by Susan Jacoby (on Robert Ingersol);* Blake, by Peter Ackroyd (poet on Wm. Blake);
Norman Thomas:the last Idealist, by W. A. Swanberg; *
Johnny Appleseed, by Howard Means;
Rousseau, by Leo Damroswch;
Washington, by Ron Chernow *
Dr. Joseph Warren, Sam Foreman (patriot killed at Bunker Hill).*
Enough books for you? * marks the best
