Good base for exploring Provence

I'm looking for opinions on a good base for exploring Provence. Is Avignon too much of a city? Thinking about Arles, Avignon, or St. Remy. We are planning on 3 nights in Nice to explore around there, renting a car and driving to Provence. Then approximately 3 or 4 nights in Provence. We are planning on the end of April, early May, and trying to plan around the holidays (5/1, 5/8, and 5/9) is a challenge. Thanks to all.

Do a search here as this question has been asked many times and there are several wonderful replies. I will be staying in St. Remy after listening to many of the posters here who advised it is very well situated for touring in the area you specify.<BR>have a wonderful trip!
