Lake Garda -
Take boats around the lake - go swimming - see awesome Roman ruins at Sirmione
kids can also go to Gardaland:

Sirmione is the Bellagio of Lake Garda but in early Aug it will be a complete zoo in the daytime - obviously book ASAP - this is a huge vacation area for Europeans.
Two towns at the southern tip of the lake are rail heads for it so perhaps staying in one of these would be nice - I've stayed in Desenzano and it was a sweet town on the lake's southwest tip. Being where you can get off and then on the train helps.

Peschera de Garda(sp?) is a more interesting town IMO and the other lake rail head - between it and nearby Sirmione is a long nice sandy beach:

thank you all for your suggestions, but after looking up about some good but affordable accomodation in Garda, i think we will have to pass
now in search of some small village or town, with a pool, or by some other lake.. :/
