Golf in Scotland
 

I've been told that there are no golf carts in all of Scotland and that the use of a caddy is mandatory. Is that true? Due to a physical requirement, that would preclude playing.

This wouldn't be the worst thing in the world but it would be nice to play a few holes at St. Andrews, if it were possible.

Does anyone know if carts are available?

I played St. Andrews several years ago and did notice a couple of carts on the course. I really don't know what the actual requirements are for a cart. Caddies are NOT mandatory as you can walk with your own bag or use their "pull cart". Hope you get that opportunity to play St. Andrews as it's really a treat for golfers. Have a Great Trip!!! Mike

There are carts available on some courses and no-where is the use of caddies mandatory (I think).

When you say St Andrews, if you mean the Old Course, do you know how hard it is to get a tee there?

But employing a Scottish caddy is one of the highlights of a round at any of the great courses. Can you walk at all? If so, you can engage a caddy or bag carrier. A caddy is "certified" and advises you during the round. A bag carrier is a teenager or maybe a retired local who just carries the bag.

If walking is out, most of the courses have websites - you should contact them individually to ask if they have carts for disbled players. A couple of Scottish golf books I just checked both say "upon producing a certificate of ill health an electric cart may be produced". Neither one spells out exactly which courses this applies to - but I would guess most of the "biggies" are included.

Is St. Andrews the only course you are interested in playing?. As stated in the other replies, it is hugely difficult to get a tee time and the cost is very steep. If you are based in Edinburgh, then there are many great courses in that area that are available. Gullane nos. 1,2and 3, Longniddry, and North Berwick are just south of the city and are easily accessible.
