Golden Circle - bus or drive?

Planning a solo trip to Iceland in May. I'll only be there for 3 days, so I want to see as much as possible. I was thinking about renting a car to see Geysir/Gullfoss rather than taking a bus tour, primarily to take advantage of the longer daylight hours (I was thinking I could do something else in Reykjavik in the morning and not leave town until 1 pm or so). Are Geysir/Gullfoss natural wonders that one can see at any time, or do they have set hours or must-see vistor centers?

Open at all times IIRC. Just make sure you're there in daylight.

Hi sharonha,

have you googled the iceland tourist board web-site? lots of links there to the golden circle and various sites. Geysir even has its own web-site - www.geysircentre.com.

there are lots of companies that wil pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavik and take you out on a whole day. just touring, or super-jeeps, rafting, snow-mobiling, etc. one i found when planning our family trip in the summer is www.icelandvisitor.com but there are lots of others.

as they know where all the main sights are, you may find that that is easier than self-driving, which may not be much fun on your own especially trying to drive and map-read simultaneously.

regards, ann

It is best to go with a tour and a guide. They know the way to go, and will give you information about what you are seeing.

Hi Sharonha

I'm also going solo to Iceland in May, and have similar questions now that I'm getting more into my research. let me know if you want to discuss further.
