I agree with most of what Tuscanlife writes.

Not sure if this has already been posted (I have been away for a week or so), but if you have not read it, take a look at this story on the practice of charging turisti prices at some Roman eateries.

During our most recent trip to Italy, this is what I did:

1) I researched here restaurants in Florence & Venice. I read and read (and read).

2) Then when I found "our" top picks, I placed a dot on my fold out map to indicate where the restaurants were, and that way we knew each day after visiting here or visiting there, we knew of a restaurant that was nearby.

3) I knew from experience that it does not take a five star restaurant to have a good meal in Italy. Tons of family owned, very well run places to dine. So we just went the recs we found here.

4) This plan worked out VERY well for us and out of all the Fodorite recs, NONE were bad. We ate very well.

Hope our plan of attack, so to speak, works out for others. it worked out well for us, because it was just so nice to know there was a highly recommended restaurant in the area when we needed one.

p.s. I never made a reservation, however we did travel in the off season.
