Going to the Marais Need some info as the neighborhood is new to me
 

Hi folks. Finally managed to boke the girls only weekend away. The boys will just have to live without us for a weekend. We are staying at the hotel Caron de Baurmarchais (sp?) in early August and we want to explore this area more. Any late night suggestions for after meals i.e bars cafes also whats the story with the Paris Plage is it still on this year and is there music/dancing at night? Just looking to run around, eat well and explore. Any nice cheese experiences nearby. We are both fans of epoisse and no one will go near us when we buy it. Last BBQ we had in Ireland we were banned to the end of the garden bacuse it was so ripe and smelly (Delicious!). I have the falafel place L'as on my list. Also maybe a raclette/fondue restaurant and or St Cirque mentioned a souffle place ages ago that I cannot find. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Siobhan: The soufflé place I probably mentioned was La Cigale, in the 6th, but I think I read here that it moved or went out of business. Maybe someone else knows?

I'm not a big connoisseur of the Marais, but Ma Bourgogne and La Guirlande de Julie, both on the Place des Vosges, are great restaurants, and Le Passage in the Passage de la Bonne-Graine and La Tartine at 24 rue de Rivoli are nice wine bars.

Besides La Cigale, there's also a place called LE SOUFFLE, which specializes in all types of souffles. However, they are NOT located in the Marais (maybe 7th arrondissement). I would do a search on this site to find their exact location.

i stayed at the same hotel two years ago and loved it. we enjoyed a nearby wine bar (w/ delicious food) called Le Coude Fou - which i think means "the crazy elbow." it was just one or two streets west of the hotel. the owner was really nice and took good care of us.

there's also a cool bar just up the street called Au Fer a Cheval (horseshoe?). it was closed while we were there, but i think was being remodeled.

AND, les philosophes cafe, also just north of the hotel, where there was a lovely waiter named francois . . .

I really wanted to go to Le Coude Fou while we were at the Marais. We passed by it once, but then completely forgot where it was after that. We asked a bunch of people in the neighborhood, and they hadn't heard of it...RATS!

The Marais sure is a fun neighborhood to get lost in, isn't it?

yes, we've stayed in the marais twice and love it. next trip (november! woo hoo!) we're staying near the jardin du luxembourg. looking forward to exploring anew, but hope to return to the 4th as well.

I'm soooooooooooo jealous! Make sure you post back here when you return to let us know which part you liked better.

La Cigale is no longer at the rue Chomel address; it is now on the rue Recamier as Travelnut notes. Having eaten at both La Cigale Recamier and at Le Soufflé at 36 rue Mont Thabor in the 1st (tel: 01 42 60 27 19), I much prefer the latter.

Rue Vieille du Temple has lots of trendy cafés and bars, as well as a branch of Amorino for gelato, which you'll probably want in August. You're right, definitely go to L'As du Felafel on rue de Rosiers if you're a fan of felafel. Place Sainte-Catherine is a pleasant tree-shaded spot with several restaurants. Mariage Frères on rue du Bourg-Tibourg has lovely brunches and great selection of teas.

Paris Plage is scheduled to be operating, along with the amusement park set-up in the Tuileries.

Can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel(under $140.) in the Marais area? How about a place with air?

At the Place de Bastille, on Bearmarchaise Blvd., I can recommend the Lyon-Mulhouse Hotel for your budget. Nice sized rooms, better bath ... all the comforts of home. OK...technically its not exactly the Marais... a block or two outside... close enough for family! We easily walked to the Place de Vosges and Bofingers.

Surfside I got my hotel for only 137 euro for a double. Thanks to you all you are stars and come up with the best info. This is a long needed quick break for myself and a friend who is starting University as a mature student this year. It's her last Hurrah for the next 4 years. I am so happy for her.

St Cirq the wine bars are exactly what we would love...trying to brush up more on our wine as the years go by and we are getting food ideas for a possible market stall here in Dublin.

Travel nut I really liked the Marais website. Many thanks to all again...Keep them coming. Oh any funky fabric or trimmings shops would be great. Decorating my new apt and we need some decoration or pictures. Can't wait!
