Going to Rouen, with a stop at Giverny on the way

If we wanted to take the train to Rouen, but stop at Giverny on the way, would we purchase a round trip ticket to Rouen, stop at Giverny, and then get back on the train to go to Rouen, using the same ticket? Or... would it be necessary to buy a ticket to Vernon, go to Giverny, go back to the train station, purchase a ticket to Rouen, and when leaving Rouen purchase a ticket to Paris? In other words, can one travel to Giverny and Rouen on the same ticket? Sorry if this is confusing...

buy the RT to Rouen, you can stop off at Vernon if you wish on that ticket. It should be good for the entire day.

Regardless, you can buy the ticket from Rouen to Paris wherever you want, you don't have to buy it in Rouen. YOu can buy train tickets anywhere in France for anywhere else. I think you are under the impression that there is some single ticket called a roundtrip ticket, and that isn't the case. There isn't any such thing, even if you buy a roundtrip, they give you two separate tickets for each half.

Hi Christina,
Sorry, I never saw your reply until now. Thanks so much! You're right about my impressions. We haven't traveled much by train in France.

In France, the standard fare for a round trip is exactly twice the one-way fare.
You can break your journey at an intermediate station and continue the same day on the same ticket. This obviously doesn't apply to TGVs and other trains where seat reservations are compulsory - in that case, you'd need to book each journey separately.

Thanks, Geoff! Good to know about not being able to stop on the TGV.

Sandy, when are you going?

We have plans to go in February and I am also planning a visit to Rouen. Or maybe Rheims. Can't make up my mind.

Hi Debbie,
We're not going until April! I'll look forward to your trip report Meanwhile, I'll be researching too. LOL! I know what you mean. I keep changing my mind, but I think Rouen, with a stop at Giverny on the way back.

Lenny,
LOL! You think? Actually, I do research non-stop except when we're traveling. When we come back from one trip, I start planning the next one!
