I don't want to add too much complication to your apartment search but you might want to look at this thread which discusses different neighborhoods and a lot of different apartments

We just returned from Rome, May 5 and used Sleep in Italy for a 6 day apt rental in Trastevere. The apartment was nice, but further from bus or taxi stops than I would recommend, especially for 1st timers or those with mobility issues. We will definitely stay in apartments in the future, and cannot say enough good things about the sevice provided by Sleep in Italy. They met us at the apt, gave us a briefing, answered our questions and left us alone. When we asked about check out procedures, he said just hang the key inside the door and shut it behind you, which is exactly what we did. We also used their Limo services for pick-up from and back to the airport(50E)and again their service and driver was excellent. One word of caution since you will be going early Sept. It will still be rather hot and humid in Rome, so you may want to be sure wherever you stay, it has air conditioning 24hrs. If it can be coordinated with your Rome hotel/apt schedule, staying overnight in Florence is an outstanding ideal, if not, then the day trip to Florence is definitely recommended. You can rest on the train there, sightsee, shop, eat gallons of gelato and rest on the train back to Rome. As others have said, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon areas are the ideal locations, however campo dei fiori is close to where you need to be, and remember the A/C.
Have a great 50th birthday trip.

LBev769375...thank you so much for your info regarding Sleep In Italy. It makes us feel much better knowing someone had a great experience working with them. This trip is all I've thought about since realizing we needed to change the location of our accomodations. (I am planning this trip as a surprise for my husband and I don't want him to have to worry about a thing...nor be disappointed with the apartment). We will definately make the sure the apt has 24 hour A/C. Thanks again and take care.

I have been to Rome a couple of times now and have always used this limo service - same price as a taxi and they have always been extremely reliable www.limoservicerome.com.

On my first trip to Rome I did the Context Rome Vatican Art Tour and I decided to do the same tour again this year. Even though it was the same tour it was different docents so different perspectives - the first time our docent was more into sculpture and this time she was more into paintings etc. It is expensive (to my way of thinking anyway) but I would have to say that I think it is money well spent - a truly wonderful tour.

This time I tried Angel Tours who are considerably cheaper and I did the Roman Forum and Colosseum tour and was very happy with it. My first trip I used Context for the Forum etc and feel that Angel offer just as good for a lot less expense.

I do think the tours are well worth spending some money on as they are incredibly informative.

You'll have no trouble finding your own wonderful dining experiences but remember it is absolutely compulsory to have a Gelato EVERY day!
