Going to Positano

Hi,
My husband and I are going to be staying in Positano for 5 nights. We're flying into Naples.
Should we rent a car? My husband doen't mind driving, he enjoys it usuall7. Take a taxi? Really don't want to spend a lot of time commuting there because we're only there for a short time.
Thank you!

We did not need or want a car when we were in Positano (although I do recommend hiring a private car from Naples to Positano over the train/bus). If they are running, the ferrries are much more fun than the bus to get around the coast. If its low season you might be okay with a car, but I prefered public transportation.

Hi i,

There is bus service from NAP to Sorrento: http://www.curreriviaggi.it/

From there, you can take the SITA bus to Positano.

Ask your hotel for directions in town.

When are you going?

Thanks Ninkette and Ira. We're going next week, arriving 10/17 so I believe it's considered low season.
Ira, we're arriving in Naples at 12:40 PM. Any idea how long taking buses will take? Thanks

I would definitely recommend taking a taxi or hiring a private car to get you from Napoli to Positano. This is only because once you arrive in Positano, you will not touch the car again. It is much more practical to take the bus or ferries to take you from town to town in this Amalfi - Capri area. My only caution would be to be very careful about negotiating the price before you leave Napoli. It is quite a well known fact that the Napolitani cab drivers can try to gouge tourists. The only way I might consider driving is if you are sure your hotel in Positano provides parking at a nominal fee or free. Take some comfy shoes, as Positano is all tiny stairway type streets full of delightful shops and restaurants. If you can make it to the town of Amalfi, the church is a must see. Also if you go to Capri for a day by ferry, I suggest taking one of the open air taxis to the "Marina Piccola". Aqua blue water and great seafood served ocean-side. The swimming is usually still good til the end of October. A much better way to spend a day in Capri, than shopping in the same old touristy stores.

Have a great time.

Hi I,

You should make the 14:30 bus to Sorrento.

SITA bus schedules are at http://tinyurl.com/ybe6xk

I think that the ferries will be running, subject to weather conditions.

You might enjoy a visit to Paestum. We took the ferry from Positano to Salerno and then the train.

On the way back, we took the SITA bus from Salerno via Amalfi.

Thanks, we're leaning towards a taxi to positano. Any recommendations on affordable driver?

Steve_James Oct 11th, 2007 12:19 AM

Hi Love - For a limo transfer the following have all been recommended here:

Positano-based:
www.positanocarservice.com
www.flaviogioia.com
www.limocarservice.net
www.benvenutolimos.com

Sorrento-based:
www.francescomarrapese.com
www.cuomonet.it
www.tourofitaly.com

The going rate is approximately € 100.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

It may be an extraagance but I arranged a car and their driver from my hotel to pick me up at Naples airport .It saved time etc .Extravagant perhaps but it was good and I sat back and relaxed .I used it as well to take me into Pompeii. Might be worth making an inquiry re price before settling on a taxi

ilovetravel Oct 11th, 2007 06:59 AM

Thanks Steve. I contacted some of the car services listed and they quoted 100 euros one way. I think it's reasonable and will save us time. I also called the hotel and their quote was higher, 120 euros. Not sure why the hotel's was higher, so we'll probably go with one of the car service companies. Thanks!

After having stayed a week in Positano arriving from Rome by train to Naples, milk run train to Sorrento and bus to Positano I would highly recommend arranging for a driver to take you from Naples to Positano and back!! It took us forever to get there and when we left we hired a driver from Positano to Naples and it took no time at all! It was cheaper to go by train/bus but it took up 1/2 of a holiday day and was soooo slow. Not worth it in my mind!

Hi il,

>Not sure why the hotel's was higher, ...

They get a commission when they arrange for a pickup.

I haven't read all the responses, but in my opinion you should rent a car. It is low season, so the traffic won't be a big factor. you'll be there for seven days, which is a long time. having a car available at a given's moment is nice. biggest question is budget: yes, local transit is cheaper, but If you can afford a rental car, do it. We didn't have a rental car when we were there last year, and I sort of regret it.

ilovetravel Oct 12th, 2007 10:20 AM

Thanks everyone! We booked Sea Horse car service @ 90 euro per trip.

Steve_James Oct 13th, 2007 01:14 AM

So ... what made you book a company nobody's mentioned? Just curious ...

Steve

ilovetravel Oct 13th, 2007 04:31 AM

Actually I was looking through some past posts on Amalfi and it was mentioned in this company was mentioned in one of them. I reached out to as many suggested car services as I could and picked the least expensive :) They all pretty much offer the same deal - english speaking driver, same car type, etc.

We just returned from 4 days in Amalfi and used Tour of Italy for our Naples transfers to Sorrento and back from Positano....it was definitely worth the money and the way to go.
We loved Amalfi coast and day trip to Capri ( picked up a tour for 20 Euro on the hydrofoil with Elio).... have fun.

RandyK Oct 13th, 2007 11:18 AM

Having just come back from Amalfi yesterday I can't think of a worse idea than renting a car. The view is beautiful along the Amalfi coast, but the road has more curves than a Vegas chorus line! I'd check out other options!
