First I want to say to the Mom, these threads often splinter off, don't take it personally.

Capo: the age I found was 18

You're welcome, Capo.

Still about jazz clubs, kids and alcohol: I know that French parents are strict, but the French culture has nothing against kids drinking wine. They start to do it, I guess, much earlier than American kids do. Wine is, for the French, the same as a soda is in the US. So, I wonder which alcohol prohibition is this, should be spirits, or above 90 only, and not wine... Or as far as kids drink home, at lunch and diner time, is fine, but they can't enter a place where alcohol is sold?

Honestly, I'm confused.

I don't have any very authorative books on French laws re: minors and drinking/nightclubs,etc..but in the guide books that I have on France/Paris they say that the legal age for drinking is 18-that would be the Access guides & Fodors, actually and those are probably up to date..This whole splintering is weird, the question about jazz clubs was interesting, and informative and now there is this debate-cool in it's way,no? But as to taking children to French clubs etc.,during our visits to Paris, and ventures into clubs (Buddha Bar,Le Villa, and something in Montmarte that was too seedy to remember) we never saw young children, maybe the youngest was college age- early 20's..actually-the restaurants we went to didn't have children in them either, but we always eat late in Paris. I remember joking with my husband that the French were more open to having dogs in the cafes that children~I guess this is all I have to contribute M

I work in the public health field and have seen information on various European health sites on alcoholism on this topic which I don't remember the URLs of offhand (but could probably find at work), but I believe the legal age varies in France depending on type of alcohol and purchase vs consumption in public. The age is 16 to purchase and to consume in public beer and wine (I think alcohol content 3 pct or under) and the public consumption age is 18 for other alcholic drinks (I think slack is cut for those with their parents and they may be served, don't know if that's legal or custom). Those underage can be in places that serve alchol, I've certainly seen children in cafes or restaurants that serve drinks but children wouldn't be in jazz clubs. I have seen children at outdoor fair type things or ginguettes of course, or concerts in the park where alcohol is served. For example, in the summer, they do have various types of music (Latin, world, haven't seen jazz) in summer concerts in Luxembourg gardens and kids will be there, they are listed in Pariscope (about 4 pm Sunday, for example), so I'd suggest looking for those things in Pariscope. They do have concerts for young people at the outstanding music complex La Cite de la Musique at La Villette up north near Porte de Pantin which are in the afternoon, but these are often classical, although I've seen interesting world music on those young persons' programs (see programs on www.cite-musique.fr)

In New Orleans, there is Preservation Hall & The House of Blues, both have entertainment and are not specifically night clubs. The Jazz clubs a/k/a Nightclubs are spread out through the Quarter, a few on Bourbon, next to the barkers selling peep shows and adult novelties and toys, and though you may see children around in the day, only those tourists making their hurried way to a restaurant in the evening would have children. Though this has nothing to do with the post of Paris Jazz clubs that Mike started, I could not help but think what "interested" parent would respond to what Jazz clubs she could take her children to, when they should be snug as a bug in their beds with sweet dreams. Try "interesting" mom next time.

Mike, a couple of years ago a had the same question, opened a thread in a french jazz site (I can't remember which was)and received several well informed advices. I went to Le Sunset Jazz Club (60 rue des Lombards Tel: 01 40 26 46 60)and it was fantastic. It is supposed to be one of the very best jazz places in Paris. it was full of americans and we had a great night. It is a few blocks from the Pompidou Centre. You can find a review at http://www.jetsetting.net/article.php?sid=79

Enjoy,

Carlos
