Going to Munich

I'm going to Munich for a week. I want to spend a day in either Nuremberg or Garmisch-Partenkirchen (in the Bavarian Alps). Which one should I spend a day going to?

Further afield, but, for me, no question, Nuremberg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/nuremberg

Since at least 20 possible destinations for day trips come to my mind, what made you choose Nürnberg or Garmisch in the first place?
You could as well go to Salzburg or Augsburg. Or to Füssen. Or Chiemsee with Herrenchiemsee palace....

Since you will be in one city already(Munich), I would go to Garmisch and take the Zugspitzbahn (cog railway) to Germany's highest mountain. Going by train Munich to Garmisch, you can use the heavily discounted Bavarian Ticket (Bayernkarte) DAY ticketfor the round trip. Costs:EUR 25. Limitations: On weekdays, you must start trip after 9AM. You can use only Regio trains , but that's all that is running between Munich and Garmisch.

For schedules, see www.bahn.de.

Incidentally, you can also use this ticket to Nuernbereg, but it's more time consuming.

I agree with the previous poster about why Nuremberg or Garmisch-Partenkirchen? I'd go with Salzburg or Innsbruck or Mittenwald or Berchtesgaden or tour any number of castles or some of the Romantic Road on a day tour....

I guess I haven't done enough research. I want to see the Alps, possibly a castle, and somewhere with a cool market place.

Hi Union44,

Garmisch has the Alps, of course. In addition to ascending the Zugspitze, you can find a nice trail to walk along to make your Alpine experience more memorable.

Garmisch also has a farmer's market on Friday mornings, but I don't know if that's what you mean by "cool."

However, there aren't any castles in Garmsich. There is a 12th century ruins just outside of town though.

Maybe you would want to see Linderhof and then stop in Oberammergau also?

Have fun as you plan!
