Going to Madrid............1st time since 1979........new some advice

My son and I are going on a high school trip and will be in italy, france, monaco, and then spain. Have taken him to Barcelona, but now we will be going and staying in madrid for several days at the Westin Palace. I stayed here as a kid, but need to know about some of the excusions day trips available. We want a guided tour, and since my family is from Spain (most live in Malaga and Barcelona), I wanted to take my son to El Escorial and of course "The valley of the fallen". Does anyone know if the Valley of the fallen is open yet? Since my family since the 30's were in the Guardia Civil, I have told my son our history....also want to take him to some other sidetrips. We will be in Madrid for 3 days and then will take the AVE to Malaga.

I would really appreciate any ideas!!

To answer your question Does anyone know if the Valley of the fallen is open yet?
No it is not open, nor for the foreseeable future either.

You'll find that the Guardia Civil has changed tremendously since Franco's passing, and for the better, but knowing the history of the GC is very important, especially for your son. Many in Spain do not have fond memories of the dark days of the civil war.

Currently, there is no date for the reopening of the Valley of the Fallen. It's been closed since 2010 due to structural considerations.
