On Rick Steves' PBS travel program recently, he was in Cinque Terre. While dining at a restaurant in Vernazza--Trattoria Gianni Franzi as I recall-he ordered fish. The waiter said "With fish, you must order wine. If you have water in your stomach, the fish will just start swimming again." :)

Some people don't drink wine or coffee because it makes them sick. It has nothing to do with religious reasons.

Go and drink water. It is better for you anyway.

Now if the fodors police don't remove this, you wil see this comment.

Milk too. Remove the former "Everybody Needs Milk" ad campaign (in the U.S.)? They had to (or agreed to) drop that slogan since it's untrue. Not only does everybody not need milk, it makes some lactose-intolerant bodies ill.

Duh. Rembember, not remove.

I need some wine.

There was a huge milk campaign in Switzerland this past summer; a cyclist taking a break and milking a cow. Said something about "natural doping".

Thank you Karen, I'm glad I'm not the only one. :-)

Regarding Trattoria Gianni's, it was where I had one of my most memorable and most delicious meals in all of Italy! And I did indeed have vino.
xxx:

That is a common line in Italy (and I expect France, Spain, Greece and all the other wine-producing and wine-drinking countries to have similar jokes). Some Italians, when asked if they want watr or wine, will answer whether you expect them to drink or to wash. This does not mean that these people refuse drinking water when it's the case, obviously: we are not a drunkards' country!

Milk? Need someone with a lactase deficiency? Actually this dodes not mean that I cn't drink milk, it only means that if I have too much milk (more than one small glass per day, approx) I start... it's not nice to say.. I start farting!!! ^_^;;;
