All good advice above but don't miss the Jüdisches Museum (Jewish Museum) it was a moving and memorabile experience. www.jmberlin.de/site/DE/homepage.php It's not far from Check Point Charlie

If you want something a little different, try the Arcotel Velvet on Oranienburgerstrasse. Lots of restaurants of all types in the area, and public transportation right outside the front door--though we found taxis cost-effective for our party of 4 adults if we weren't going too far. Interesting and non-strenuous walk to the museum island or Unter den Linden.

Dining:
Typical local pub a block from Arcotel Vevet.
Baeren Schenke

Healthy breakfasts next to the hotel:
Ambulance

German beer and comfort food near Museum Island:
Brauhaus Georgbrau, Spreeufer 4

Lots of choices: Ka-De-We food floor

Malay/Indian fusion: Mirchi across street from hotel

Nice Italian place: "Cavallino Rosso" -Hannoversche Str. 2, a few blocks from the hotel

DAX- Now that we have come back and did stay at the Westin I somewhat agree. The pillows and beds were horrible and the staff were OK. I do think that since we used the train station quite a bit it was very well located and close to all the restaurants we happen to go to.
