Going to Dijon, do you think I can go to Amsterdam?

staying in dijon for a week, im doing wine tours, explore the town, etc. Seems like dijon is a small city and a week may not be needed. I was thinking i could do 3 days in dijon, and a day and a half in amsertdam...do you think it would be worth it, or go to switzerland instead? how long is the train ride from dijon to amsterdam? what is the weather like in this area? thanks!

What time of year will you be there?

Train schedules for all of europe can be found at bahn.de.

And how do 3 and 1.5 equal 7 days (a week you said)?

When are you going, autumn? The weather is generally nice, some rain, take a jacket.

I didn't check details, think the train is about 6 hours, probably a change in Paris. You might check direct flights, a possibility.

Lots to see in Burgundy besides Dijon but perhaps that's covered in the wine tour?

I would want more than a day and a half in Amsterdam, be careful because getting there and back could really eat into your time, which brings up the question, where are you flying in and out of?

I'd go to Strasbourg, much closer.

I'd stay in France for that short length of time. Loved Strasbourg, heaps to see in Burgundy, the countryside is very pretty. Or what about Lyon?

If you have to ask, not sure those areas are for you.

Yes a week in Dijon for many would be way overkill - nice enough city that gives a hoot but yes do another base - either nearby in Switzerland - the Jungfrau Region to me and many is the very highlight of Switzerland - a train from Dijon to Interlaken would be just a few hours or so and once there go to a mountain village like Grindelwald or Wengen and be eyeball to eyeball with glacier-girdled soaring high Alps from your hotel balcony:

Amsterdam is also a great place to spend 3 days but it would take most of a day to get there.

anyway for lots on trains check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. Buy your tickets well in advance and get potentially deep discounted tickets.

What's the weather like?? About 32 degrees yesterday in Dijon.

I agree a week in Dijon is overkill.

Lyon is known for its cuisine, although it might not be the kind you want. Strasbourg has some points of interest, but is not exactly a hip exciting place (neither is Dijon, though).

It really depends what the end point of this trip is, you must have to go home from somewhere, don't you? Where would that be?

You can obviously get to Paris in less than 2 hrs if you want a big city with lots to do. You can even get to Marseille in much less time than Amsterdam (less than 4 hrs by train) for something different and perhaps more exciting than Strasbourg or Lyon. It will take about 7 hrs to get to Amsterdam. Switzerland isn't a bad idea, either, of course, much easier than Amsterdam.

I agree a week in Dijon is overkill.>
2 days for the city itself would be overkill for me and I think many - but if using as a base to day trip to vineyards or day trip in general OK but most would prefer a smaller town like Beaune to base in.
