Going to a Giverny- Should I do a tour?

In my dozens of trips to Vernon I have never NOT seen a shuttle bus waiting when the train arrived. In summer months there are usually two, and sometimes three, buses waiting. In spring and fall there may only be one bus so move quickly once you get off the train to make sure you get a seat on the bus.

You might benefit from a small group tour, if you are really interested in Monet's life and art, and want to get an in-depth view from an art historian.
Context Travel gives excellent tours - I've been on several, and highly recommend them if you are interested in something other than just wandering around the property.

First, Andrew.. reread Frenchmystics posts.. then you might want to consider saying "my bad" for insinuating he was accusing you of not telling the truth..

He was merely being VERY helpful explaining that if you WAIT to buy a ticket when the agent onboard approaches you ,, you will be fined as a fare dodger, that the onus is put on you to FIND the agent and purchase your ticket.. if he finds you .. it means you might be just trying to cheat system.

OP. I have taken the Fattire tour to Giverny and I loved it, but it was a nice day.. it might not be so fun in rain( part of the fun was buying picnic goodies and picnicking in a beautiful place) ... so if trip was in summer I would say definitely take the tour.. but since its not.. and April weather can go either way , I would either way till I arrive in Paris, check out the weather forecast for next few days.. and chance being able to book the tour.. or simply do it yourself .

I am with the others that have taken the train BUT I would
strongly advise to go very early in the day to avoid the
bus tours as then it gets crowded.

I'm wondering if there is a time when Giverny is not crowded. We've been there twice and both times it was packed--once on a September afternoon, a second time in May at opening time. On the September visit we learned not to go on a Wednesday afternoon--the place was packed with students.

We knew May would be busy because the wisteria was in bloom. So we bought tickets in advance and arrived before the gardens opened. There were very few cars in the lot so we parked right near the entrance. Great, we thought, maybe we'll be among the first in, but when we went to the entrance for prepaid tickets there was a huge line, I think from a cruise ship.

We went in late October on a slightly overcast day and there couldn't have been more than a fehttp://www.theplayerstribune.com/demaryius-thomas-mom-broncos/ dozen people. Granted it was far from prime blooming season but there were still loads of flowers.

The best part - I got many pictures of the bridge with no one on it! There were a handful of people in the house and it's main gardens.

There is also the American Museum (modern art) in Giverny.

Catch the first train out of Paris and you can miss alot of the crowd and buses.

The OP posted a month ago and has never returned. Either she is waiting (hoping) to hear from Fodors that someone/anyone has responded - or they've given up on the trip.
