The music of God Save the Queen/King is also used for the melody for the national anthem of Liechtenstein. And the music for the Star Spangled Banner is that of an old British drinking song. But what can you expect from a national anthem that is a question?

When I hear "Land of Hope and Glory" I am often reminded of Brendan Behan's slightly ribald version beginning, "I'm Lady Chatterly's lover, a game gamekeeper that's me...".

Back to the OP - the thought occurs that one "non-state" occasion where GSTQ might (but not necessarily) be played is local remembrance services (since we're in that season). Also, this is where we start to enter the season of tabloid hysteria if someone in the public eye is seen to be not wearing a poppy. I saw the first this year today, so as soon as the British Legion's official launch day, everyone on at least live TV shows (even or maybe especially Strictly Come Dancing) will be wearing them - I'm enough of a traditionalist to think it vulgarly ostentatious to wear one before about a week before Remembrance Day. Oh, and by the way, it's already been announced that Liz'n'Phil have handed over the wreath-laying duty for Remembrance Day - standing an hour and a half or so is not a very good idea for 90+-year-olds.

Bilbo- "Early One Morning" was part of the godawful Radio 4 UK Theme, which thankfully is no longer used. I know very few in Britain would have heard it it was on so early but it was not something I enjoyed waking up to. There are few pieces of music that send absolute terror down my spine like "Sailing By".

The dulcet tones of the presenter and the whimsical notes sound like bliss when you are drifting off in a nice warm bed with the central heating on full. However, if you are anchored off any particular beach in the Western isles, in sand and weed that you know isn't great holding and the usual one liner appears

We went to Proms in the Park last September - singing Land of Hope & Glory and God save the Queen with tens of thousands of people was quite moving I thought.
