On UK tv, they'll be showing the live Tour de France at 3 pm to 4 pm our time, which would make it 10 am to 100 am your time.

BTilke Jul 23rd, 2005 03:52 PM

Oops, I was thinking East Coast time. Take 3 hours off that, so 7 am to 8 am.

TravelerGina Jul 23rd, 2005 04:24 PM

Coverage on OLN starts at 7:30 a.m. Eastern, so will start at 4:30 a.m. Pacific.

Yawn_boring Jul 23rd, 2005 05:20 PM

LANCE! LANCE! LANCE!

for those battling disease, may this be an inspiration.

S_Holmes Jul 23rd, 2005 05:31 PM

Fantastic race; perfect course planning; spectacular OLN coverage here in the USA. Armstrong is one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. Have you read his recent Playboy interview? Very interesting...here it is...

DixieChick Jul 23rd, 2005 06:11 PM

Thanks, S_Holmes. That was a very interesting interview.

Barbara Jul 23rd, 2005 10:41 PM

So it's true, you guys get Playboy for the articles!

Madison Jul 24th, 2005 01:57 AM

Thank you Btilke and TravelerGina. He is such an inspiration for so many people. A good friend of mine is battling breast cancer and was so inspired by his book and what he has done with his life, that it has given her a lot of hope. He's a gem

bob_brown Jul 24th, 2005 09:05 AM

Well, Lance went, and now he is gone from the Tour de France.
I can make a case for him being among the elite of all athletes. Has anyone been more dominant in his or her sport at the highest level?

Gretchen Jul 24th, 2005 09:21 AM

Even if you can think of someone, they hadn't come back from the dead.
He was the first winner to be allowed to speak from the podium. He finally got to tell the naysayers/disbelievers what he thinks of them. A great man and a great champion.

S_Holmes Jul 24th, 2005 09:26 AM

Yeah, he's gone -- to 7th Heaven! Kind of sad we won't see him in competition anymore, I'm going to miss him but his legacy will live on.

He is for sure one of those in the pantheon of über-elite atheletes. There are others; Woods, Bird, Gretzky, Jordan , Chamberlain come to mind.

Catbert Jul 24th, 2005 09:50 AM

I found it very odd that they changed the sprint rules after the race was over. Unless, that is, that the OLN commentators were mistaken.

Scarlett Jul 24th, 2005 10:00 AM

<Yhellow>
Yay, Lance!!

The pics are also very interesting :-D

Congrats to Lance!!! and the Discovery Channel Team!!! Great job!!!

cmcfong Jul 24th, 2005 11:35 AM

Cool post, Scarlett. Great ride, Lance!

S_Holmes Jul 24th, 2005 12:11 PM

I'm already feeling the effects of Le Tour withdrawal.

//Note to self: start planning now to go see part of it in person next year\\

Found any good slide-show photo journals of this year's Le Tour de France? Please post a link if you have!

Here is a minor one I have found:

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/home/main100.shtml

(link labeled "photo essay" is currently found on this page under main artlicle)

-- photo #10 w/sunflowers is
pretty nice.

Gretchen Jul 24th, 2005 12:28 PM

They didn't change the sprint rules per se. They did not give intermediate points for sprints but did give the stage win points/time which allowed Vinocurov to move up. I think if anyone didn't understand there would have been a protest before the awards ceremony.
Look on oln.com or cyclingnews.com for videos, etc.

S_Holmes Jul 24th, 2005 12:36 PM

Sorry, I see it is photo #11 showing the riders and sunflowers, but #10 with the hay rolls is nice too.

S_Holmes Jul 24th, 2005 01:06 PM

Ahhh, I see! (said the blind man)> that website is constantly updating with more photos, thus the individual position of each particular picture keeps shifting... have a look anyway but disregard the photo #s I have previously stated.

ilovetulips Jul 24th, 2005 02:29 PM

Let the parades begin! Once Lance returns home to Austin, there will be a big celebration downtown to honor him. I haven't gone in the past, but I think we will take advantage of this last piece of history before his retirement. Although I am sure Sheryl Crow will be seeing (Ugggh!), I think it would be so fitting to play Coldplay's "Yellow." Way to go Lance!

ilovetulips Jul 24th, 2005 02:30 PM

I meant that Sheryl Crow will be "singing."

letour Jul 24th, 2005 07:09 PM

I thought that John Kerry, when interviewed on OLN, summarized Lance's career well...that Lance truly is in the pantheon of all-time great athletes. I told my ten-year old son, who was fortunate enough to have watched the Tour in the Pyrenees a couple of years ago, that he can tell his grandchildren that he saw one of the greatest athletes ever. In my opinion, with his accomplishments, and the remarkable personal story that Kerry alluded to do with surviving such a significant bout with cancer, Lance ranks up there with the greatest: Ruth, DiMaggio, Ali, Jordan. What an inspiration he has given to all whose lives have been touched by cancer.

Barbara Jul 24th, 2005 07:22 PM

Now, what do I do at 9pm every night? Nothing to watch on tv!

Didn't his daughters look gorgeous in their yellow dresses?

Why didn't someone (obviously not me) think of organizing a Fodorite trip to the Tour de France?

Barbara Jul 24th, 2005 07:26 PM

One more thing, what an inspiration to moms everywhere Linda is. Massive amounts of kudos to her.

Today on oln they interviewed Wayne Gretsky and Tiger Woods for their opinions.

You would think he'd at least do a lap of honour :)

"Il restera de l'Américain l'image d'un vainqueur sans partage, un peu en guerre avec tout le monde pour autant qu'on lui résiste, mais qui puise précisément sa force dans l'adversité. Il a dû se battre pour exister en tant qu'enfant oublié par son père, se battre pour survivre au cancer, se battre pour obtenir ses succès et convaincre le monde qu'ils étaient acquis honnêtement. Sa vie jusqu'ici fut donc un combat de chaque instant, il a droit à présent à un peu de quiétude..."

BTilke: Thanks for sharing the excerpt from the Belgian press. I think that the writer captures alot of what makes Lance tick, and does so very poignantly. I thought that Lance's remarks on the podium reflected a bit of his being "en guerre avec tout le monde," as he took aim at detractors of the sport of cycling. Given his past, he has my complete understanding and sympathy, but it almost seemed like he couldn't resist that chance to fire back some.

BTilke Jul 25th, 2005 01:24 PM

By the way, MSNBC has a terrific slide show of Lance and the TdF--great photos.

Sue4 Jul 25th, 2005 06:17 PM

Definitely one of the all time great athletes. I think we'll be seeing lots more of Lance, albeit not in the Tour de France. However, I think he could do better than Sheryl Crow!

S_Holmes Jul 25th, 2005 06:49 PM

What's wrong with Sheryl Crow? And who would be "better" for him? If the are both crazy about each other, as they themselves admit, why knock the relationship. I wish them well.

Thanks for the MSNBC link, BTilke. Very nice pix.

Armstrong will be a guest on Letterman one week from tonight. (Monday Aug. 1)
