Glossglockner High Alpine Road
We will be in Munich/Salzburg area in late September - early October and would like to know exactly where to go to start the Glossglockner high alpine road. We will have a rental car.
We will spend 6 nights in Munich, 4 nights in Grassau in Chiemgau and 6 nights in Schönau am Königssee. Based on where we are staying, from which city would be the best to take the ride? I can't seem to get my head around where the scenic ride starts. I have downloaded the PDFs from the official website, but I'm still lost. How much time would be reasonable to take the ride and enjoy stopping to "smell the roses?" Any information would be most appreciative. |
lydia,
Thanks for asking this - unfortunately I cannot help, but I will follow the answers here. We will be in Hallstatt, and I don't think we will have time for this drive, but it sounds amazing, so I need to add it to "the list" for next time we are in the area. Your trip sounds wonderful, ahppy planning. |
I believe you are talking about the Grosgloekner Strasse which runs from Fusch Austria south...toward Helingblutt...best sight are half way.... it's route 107 if my 30 year old memories are right.

I think Grassau is your best bet.
In Grassau, take the short-cut road that leads from the B-305 traffic circle in Grassau toward Biesenhausen,Marquartstein. The short cut ends at the B-305 shortly before you come to Marquartstein. Follow the B-305 to Unterwoessen and Reit im Winkel. Just before you reach Reit there is another shortcutto the left that by-passes Reit. This short-cutagain ends at the B-305, as it comes out Reit. From here on, the B-305 is part of the Deutsche Alpenstrasse (German Alpine Highway) systen. It's a very good, scenic road. Follow it toward Berchtesgaden. Shortly after Fritz am Sand, the B-305 turn right, a turn which is easily to miss. You DON'T want to go to Ruhpolding. Continue on the B-305 to where it joins the B-306, coming from Inzell. Eventually, you will want to leave the B-305 at Schneizlreuth. Turn right, and follow the sign to Lofer (Austria). As you come to Lofer, turn left toward Saalfelden,Zell am See. Drive through Zell am See.You want to get to Buchs. That's where the Grossglckner Hochstrasse starts. The drive to Buchs will take you about 2 hours. How much time on the Grossglockner Strasse? That depends on the traffic. If you get stuck behind a bus, it will take longer. YTou really will have seen the most scenic part going to the top. While Heiligenblut is pretty, it adds quite a bit of driving. Afterall, you have to returnto Grassau. While in Greassau, take a separate trip to Reit im Winkel. It'sworth a visit. In fact, you canmake it a nice loop drive. Follow the directions as described |
I' don't know what's wro gwith AOL. this is the secoind time Iwas cut off:
As I was saying, follow the directions to Reit as described before. Then drive to Koessen. In Koessen, follow the directions to Schleching and from there head back to Marquartstein. There is a nice resort between Reit and Koessen, about 3km after R. The entrance is on the right side of the road. It is called Peternhof, and has a good dining room. Incidentally, while I now live in Colorado, I'm originally from Unterwoessen, 10km from Grassau. |
Treplow thank you so much! Just the information I was looking for.
