We haven't been on a Globus tour, but my SIL and BIL took one a couple of years ago. Their descriptions didn't sound appealing to us, but they had a blast and met people that they have gone on another tour with. They took every optional excursion, meal, demonstration, tour that was offered and thought everything was great.

So glad to have read your question. My husband and I are taking the very same globus tour at the end of August. Please let me know how your trip went. This is my first time to Europe and a first tour trip. I can use all the tips you can give.

I'm probably too late to help brontem...but GAO...maybe.
My cousin and I took the 12 day Best of Italy tour on June 10 of this year.
Yes, there are trade-offs.
-We loved the fact that we didn't have to worry about where to stay and how to get there. The hotels were away from the main parts of town in most cases, but we either did one of the optionals...which..with transportation..and not really knowing where to go...worked out ok.
-We really enjoyed doing dinners with our group..we had such a fun group of people...our tour rep was great (Tizianna)
-We did not go to Burano...and were glad we skipped that.
-And we were usually worn out after a day of touring...and it was better not to have to try to figure out where to go and how to get there esp. at night.
-There were times like in was so easy to walk around by yourself....but it would have been hard in Rome to figure out how to get back to Trevi Fountain..and that was the last night and we had a lot of fun at the departure dinner....skip the opt. Gondala ride in includes the private musicians...and you can get a gondala ride on your own...much cheaper...and if you have 4-6 people you can split the cost! I would not have know even how to get into the city had we been traveling on our own.
-The glass blowing place was too long...
and the leather factory in Florence...just trying to sell you something...get away as quickly as you can.
-In Venice, we walked to the Ponte Vechio bridge..wish we had taken some time to see the palace. Some went to the Ulfizzi..but I had enough art.
-We covered a lot of ground, felt safe, met some nice people.
-I never liked the hotel meals...breakfast not too great...but we found plenty to eat.
The opt. tour to the wine vineyard was nice.
-Pompeii was amazing..but it was really warm..wear your tennis shoes..and take a hat or umbrella. Will August be worse?
-Capri was really pretty and glad we went there. Do the boat ride around the island for sure! not expensive.
-My biggest regret...wish we had scheduled an extra night in Rome...maybe on the way back...we would have known our way around better..and what we had missed.
Also, I'd take a batter powered curling iron and my tennis shoes.

I was on a Globus Italy/Greece trip a few years ago. When everyone else bought the extra trip to Pompeii, I explored Roma on my own. I spent a few hours in St. Peter's, then pretty much wandered the city, taking random left and right turns based on what looked interesting to me. I saw more of Rome than anyone else on the tour and it is still one of my best memories. My cousins and I skipped several of the optional dinners and dined on our own in Florence and Athens - would not take back our choices. We had Francesca leading our group - she was informative and delightful. I grew tired of the "forced march" feel of the trip but it was a great first time choice for both countries. I am headed back to Italy in a few weeks to see some of what I missed (or want more depth on). Please let us know how you fared on your trip.

Thank you to all who replied to my query on the Globus, Best of Italy trip. My husband and I had a wonderful time and I would reccommend it to any first time traveler to Italy. We had a very nice, funny to be with group, and a terrific tour guide, Aldo. I will never forget the trip.

I have taken 4 tours with Globus, never the best of Italy, I did the Italian mosaic which i Loved. You will love your trip as long as you go with a positive mind set, not everything will 100% perfect for you, but hey your in Italian. Now the trip will be past paced but you'll get to see a ton of stuff in a short time, you could spend a week on Rome alone so in the time you spend you do get to see a lot. Someone mentioned the food I will admitt the incldued dinners and breakfest are not the best. the optional excusions are a little expensive especially if you are going with a partners, however I do all the optional excusion and most people love them. You need to do the Venice gonadola ride if you never been to venice. Also, the Globus tours i have seen for ialy in 2012 you spend the night on the Venice Island. You also need to do the florence dinner.

I noticed that you are new to this forum, so you probably did not notice that this post is over 2 years old. The OP will not benefit from your recommendations (but maybe someone else will, so all is not lost . )

libra5310; If you use Globus, remember get their price for the tour you want and then go to possibly for additional savings. We have used them once and found them reliable with good customer service. Richard
