Glastonbury
I'm going to England the end of this month and was wondering if there is anyone out there who has visited Glastonbury. How did you get there from London? And is it worth the trip?? Is there a bus tour that goes out there for the day?<BR>Thanks!

I have been to Glastonbury several times. The last time I was driving a rental car, but the first two times I took a coach, (you can also, I believe get there via train). If you are into Arthurian legend, then Glastonbury is a must see: However be advised, it is something of the "new age" center in the UK, from what I can tell, this could either be a good thing or a bad thing depending upon your view of all things "new age". Tons of fun shops for crystals, celtic art, candles, tarot reading etc etc. Goddesses, wicca all that type of thing. Personally I enjoy it for a day and a half, and then want to move to less esoteric locals. There is a great hike up to the Glastonbury Tor, and the Abbey is also a nice visit, though mostly ruined. I would recommend visiting if these sound like things that will appeal to you. I think you can get day tours that cover both Stonehenge and Glastonbury/Avebury but I am not sure of that.

There is no rail service to Glastonbury. The nearest stations are at the small towns of Castle Cary or Bruton which are each more than 12 miles from Glastonbury. If you take the train, you'll probably need to taxi the rest of the way. Not very practical for a day trip from London. If you were staying in Bath it would be more doable.<BR><BR>Your best bet is to rent a car, or to do a "new age" coach tour from London. Not many day trips go there from London but there are a few that concentrate on the mystical - like Stonehenge/Glastonbury/Cerne Abbas

Thyra sums it up. Being in Glastonbury felt like taking a step back to the 60's. Not really my cup of tea, but a walk up the Tor more than made up for it. I would go back for that alone. Don't miss it. The old, old George and Pilgrims hotel is interesting and suits the place. I got to Glastonbury by car.

If you do go to Glastonbury (which is indeed a magnet for hippie-types, High Street is full of shops), try to get there early in the morning or late in the evening, unless you like crowds. Or, go off-season. I went midday in August, and there were lots of people milling about, families with picnics etc... which is fine, unless you want some hippie-time alone to commune with the past there :D
