glasgow or edinburgh
 

we can visit only one place out of the two.....which one do u suggest.

we are 2 adults and 2 small children ...we have mobility as we are in our own car.

Well - a car is a disadvantage in both cities. But if you only have time for one -- then it must be Edinburgh. No question . .

Edinburgh. In comparison, Glasgow is a slum. Sort of like comparing Boston and Cleveland.

Nope -- there is LOTS to see in Glasgow . . . Just not <i>instead</i> of Edinburgh.

What sort of whirlwind trip are you planning? Unless it is too much in too little time -- you might have time for both.

Oh - I see from your other thread --you are basing in Peterborough.

IMO your trip is too short to even consider a jaunt up to Edinburgh. W/ London and the places you can drive to from Peterborough, plus a trip to York -- you will have PLENTY to fill your 8 days.

My Clan is from Glasgow

Sort of a happening but modern place some nice areas

some more run down ghetto areas around shipyards

Some of the islands like Butte where my grandfather

was born are awesome but Ambience Castles Scenery clearly

favor Edinburgh for family tourism also head up into the

highlands around Inverness if time extremely beautiful.

And they don't have time for the Highlands/Inverness -- or Edinburgh or Glasgow either really.

I think it would be more like comparing Boston with Philadelphia. Glasgow has some wonderful areas. I love shopping on Buchanan Street. Kelvingrove is a great museum. I haven't seen the Burrell collection yet.

I would suggest Edinburgh if you can only do one city, but don't let the others sway you from ever visting Glasgow.

So you are based in Peterborough - yet want to visit York & Edinburgh both of which are places you don't need a car, both of which can be reached quicker by direct train. Unless you intend visiting places inbetween then you should consider cancelling the car and just using the train.

Definitely leave the car in Peterborough. A drive to Edinburgh is a slog even without two toddlers in the backseat and the train journey will be part of the adventure.

BUT buy your tickets ahead of time, they can be very expensive otherwise.

The real issue is when. You will find it very difficult to get a place to stay in Edinburgh, impossible to find some place inexpensive, during the Festival, which lasts for most of the month of August in one form or another.

You don't need to be disappointed if you have to stay in Glasgow. It is a terrific place, though the residents are often incomprehensible, even to other Scots. :-)
