Glasgow or Edinburgh

We can fly in one day early and have a choice of Glasgow or Edinburgh.
If you only had 1 extra day which one would you spend it in?

janisj Aug 14th, 2008 08:43 AM

Since you apparently have never been to either one - Edinburgh for sure!

Glasgow is a wonderful city - but Edinburgh has 10 times more things for the casual visitor

zeppole Aug 14th, 2008 09:26 AM

I think it depends on your age and interests. Glasgow is for youth, modern art, the cutting edge and Mackintosh devotees, Edinburgh is for classicists, by and large, with the usual caveat for special venues and events.

But you know, they're only 15 minutes apart by train. If you don't like where you are, go to the other place!

PS: Come to think of it, perhaps it's 50 minutes. But it felt like nothing, and the train ride goes through a stretch of green countryside.

- Edinburgh for sure!

I'll vote for Edinburgh as well, as we were just there :)

Edinburgh without a doubt. It is a pretty city with the lovely castle and Holyrood Palace. Packed with intriguing history.

Another vote for Edinburgh!!!

It is beautiful! YOu will love it!!!

Things are more spread out in Glasgow and it takes more "work" to get around from place to place. There are some great muesums/parks etc. - but it is mainly a large , bustling city.

Edinburgh has everything a visitor could want - The massive castle looming over the whole city, great museums, the Royal Mile (a really unique street), Princes Street Gardens, St Giles Cathedral, Old town/New town, Arthur's Seat -- all basically w/i walking distance of each other.

Having been born in Glasgow and having lived in Edinburgh for ten years, this is a no brainer - Edinburgh every time.

Edinburgh is stunning! A castle AND a palace, plus great museums. Wonderful walking city.

I think people posting in this thread should be made to declare up front whether they've actually been to both cities.

Glasweigan joke:

"One Weegie pastime is to visit Edinburgh to play a game called 'Spot the Scot'. If you spot one you can go home immediately. No one has ever won".

On a tourist site it's not surprising that Edinburgh would win a tourist contest, and as a devotee of the Scottish Enlightenment, I headed straight to Edinburgh myself and wasn't disappointed in the bracingly beautiful city perched above the Loch. But it's not a "no brainer" that Edinburgh has "everything a visitor could want" -- people are not machines, even when they travel and tour. Just as some find Los Angeles more fascinating and culturally alive and rewarding than tourist-pleasing San Francisco (I'm definitely in that camp).

This is an exchange from another travel forum

Post subject: A couple of days to spare, Edinburgh vs Glasgow?

We are visiting Scotland and unfortunately have a limited budget/time. We're doing a four day tour and have a day spare each side. We're not sure whether we should spend both in Edinburgh or one in Edinburgh and the other Glasgow.
Anyone have any thoughts? Recommendations?
What are the 'must dos' for each place?
Thanks Smile

Edinburgh every time. Glasgow is just another city (other than it is very very Scottish, so if you want to see a real Scottish city go there).

Edinburgh is a cool city, very photogenic and tourist friendly. If I had only one day, as the OP mentioned, then I would choose it. But with any longer stay in Scotland I would certainly look at Glasgow as a base. For its accessibilty to the Western Highlands, Loch Lomond and the Ayrshire Coast and Edinburgh its an ideal choice. In addition to he huge variety of things to see and do in the city itself.

"I think people posting in this thread should be made to declare up front whether they've actually been to both cities."

Yes - countless times. For a first timer and w/ limited time it is an absolute no-brainer. To mislead a poster is not nice ;)

And just look at almcd's post if you have any additional doubt . . . .

Been to both many times and lived in Glasgow for a year. Still prefer Edinburgh for charm, atmosphere, castles, history and just plain prettiness. :)

I thank you all for your replies .
Edinburgh it will be.
