Yes - you take the train into Glasgow Central Station. Walk 3 blocks to Glasgow Queen St Station. then another train to GLA.

How long do you have between flights?

I can't easily find a direct link. Unless someone else disagrees, can I suggest you email the airport. You'll get the links on their web site. It's a hell of a long taxi ride; but you might be able to get the train to Paisley and a taxi down from there.

Get the direct train to Paisley, then take the rail-link bus to Glasgow Airport

You can't get a train from Queen Street to Glasgow Airport - they haven't built the line yet! I presume janisJ meant the airport bus from outside Queen Street (North Hanover Street).
However, if you're travelling by train from PIK you don't need to go into Glasgow - get off at Paisley Gilmour Street and get a bus or a taxi from outside the station - it's only about 1.5 miles to the terminal building

I have to say I'd hate to go all the way into Glasgow and then come out again.

Oh - sheesh - sorry. Once I start into the "Train into Glasgow / walk to other . . . ." bit I sort of go into auto pilot. Yes, I meant the coach.

However - train to Paisley/bus or taxi from there is much better anyway.

But - in either case - how long do you have for the connection?

It's a minimum of an hour TRAVELLING between the airports. Then there's the time you'll spend at Prestwick going throughb immigration / collecting luggage and simialr at Glasgow PLUS security checks.

All told I wouldn't want to have less than about 4 hours between landing & take off times to do the transfer

Thanks everyone for your help. We actually are spending the night near the GLA airport and flying out the next day. We were hoping to at least have dinner and see a tiny bit of Glasgow. Perhaps we can store our luggage at the train station downtown after taking the train in from PIK and then take a taxi out in the evening.

I think staying in an airport hotel is a waste of valuable vacation time. Most cities have easy transportation to their main airport, no matter how early your flight. Spend the night in Glasgow and then go from there to the sirport the next day.
