Glasgow hotel help
 

I've narrowed my hotel search down to a few places (I will be there in a single from March 17-19), and I'm looking for some input.

A big factor is location, especially proximity to public transportation. By the way, what kind of public transport will I be using most ... bus, underground, train?

I will probably be in the West End one day, the city centre one day, and outside (at Burrell and Pollok House) the last day.

I can't help with those lodging choices, but will give a comment about transportation. The subway is small, but if it goes where you are going it is great! It operates in a rough circle, from the city centre westward. Here is a schematic map of the rail route:

The subway is good for getting from the west end to the city centre. To get to Merchant City/St. Mungo's, you'd walk from the city centre (around 10 minutes) or bus or cab.

To get to Pollok/Burrell, you can walk around 10 mintues from the Pollokshaws West rail station, although we took a cab.

Sorry, forgot to say that there are several buses that go to Burrell/Pollok, which are listed on the museum's site:

I can't really speak about the merits of these hotels in terms of quality but I can give you some advice based purely on location.

I would rule out the Park House - yes, it's West End(ish) but a wee bit off the beaten track.

The Kelvin Hotel is very much West End; close to the junction of Great Western & Byres Roads, this is Glasgow's "bohemian" quarter. It's University country with a young population & plenty of bars & restaurants. You probably wouldn't want to walk into the city centre from here but you're handy for both the bus & the underground (the latter will have you in the city centre in 5 minutes or so).

The Kelvingrove is between the West End & the city centre but the area is a wee bit anonymous - there's nothing wrong with it, but there's just not much going on.

The Old School House is in Garnethill which is a quiet area & yet - turn a couple of corners & you're right in the heart of the city.

As I say, based purely on location I would go for the Kelvin or the Old School House.

Sorry, JoeTro - on re-reading I think I've done the Kelvingrove's location a wee bit of a disservice.

It is convenient for the Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum and there are some bars & restaurants down there.

As far as location goes, however, I still prefer the Kelvin or the Old School House.

Thanks for the comments. I do plan to visit Kelvingrove Museum and the University/Hunterian on my first day, so staying close to the Kelvingrove would be appealing for that. Park House seemed nice but a little too cute/romantic for me. I'll think between the other three.

Sorry Joe, I don't know any of these.

I've stayed several times at the Travel Inn on George Street which is very central & near Queen St station.

I've booked at Kelvingrove as I thought it would be closest to Kelvingrove and University and would therefore maximize my sightseeing time there on the first day.

It should be fine if it's Tripadvisor's number 3 - and it's very reasonable. I hope you have a nice time.

Dear Joe Tro,I know where The Old School House is....It is parallel to Sauchiehall Street...very convenient for shops....you are minutes away from Cowcaddens underground station,(a.k.a.The Subway)..In fact if I was a vistor I would choose this location for getting around...It is also interesting in that it is near the Chinese area of the city.....And not terribly far from the best French Fries(or chips).The best for taste that I have came across is McPhees in Hope Street....Horseshoe bar is about ten mins.walk away..Great shopping centres...(although I do tend to avoid them,preferring to buy locally in west-end area).
Here is a tip for booking a hotel/bed and breakfast place....If any say that they are in Shawlands,or Mount Florida,it would be false economy to book them,as they would require a short train journey to city centre...The Old School House would mean that you could walk out of your door and be within a couple of mins.right in the heart of Sauchiehall Street(probably the main thoroughfare for pubs,clubs,restaurants,and also good for general shopping)...
