Glasgow & Edinburgh: how to split four days?
 

With four nights to split between Glasgow and Edinburgh should it be two and two or one and three?

This is our first visit to Scotland and will be this November. (It's a peculiar sort of thing best done in November if you are wondering why November.) We arrive in Glasgow on a Saturday after a 6.5 hour flight and will require some sleep before we are able to do much. Immediate onward travel is not an option so we need to spend at least one night in Glasgow. On Wednesday we need to leave Edinburgh in mid morning.

Our goals for the urban part of the trip are to get a bit of a feel for the two cities and visit some museums.

In my opinion you should allow equal time. You will probably get advice to concentrate on Edinburgh but, having lived in Glasgow for 10 months recently, I believe it has as much to offer. There have been several threads on this board previously featuring comparisons of the two cities - you should be able to find them with a search.

Two days each is the only equitable thing to do. It's a pity you don't have more than 4 days to divide between these fascinating cities.

If you have time for only one museum in each city, visit the Burrell Collection in Glasgow and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. (so say I)

We visited both Edinburgh and Glasgow last month. We loved Edinburgh castle, walking around the city, and the Nat. Gallery (new Titian exhibit was on.) The narrated hop on/off red bus tour in Glasgow was a terrific overview (22 stops.) The driver said something about being able to use your ticket again in Edinburgh the next day with the same company (might be worth checking.) In Glasgow, the Museum of Transport was a fun way to spend an hour, especially to my husband (lots of classic cars and ship models.)

Thank you all. Two and two it will be. Yes, more time would be nice but we have other things to do. I always assume we will return...that way I don't fret too much about all the things we are missing.
