Glasgow and Ayr
 

Hello.
I will be visiting Glasgow and Ayr for work this week. Will have one evening and one day in Ayr, and two evenings in Glasgow. This will be my second trip to Glasgow.

Any recommendations of restaurants to eat at in both Glasgow and Ayr? So far, I'm going to Two Fat Ladies in Glasgow, and am looking for another suggestion. I like most foods, seafood, but am not to adventurous with haggus, and organs. Last time I had a lovely meal at Stravaign but am looking for a different option.

Also any suggestions of how to spend a day in Ayr? We love the outdoors, hills, beaches, walks, and village-like atmospheres.

Which Two Fat Ladies are you going to? I went to the URban Brasserie http://www.urbanbrasserie.co.uk/ a coupoe of weeks ago which was lovely. It's in the old Bank of England building in the city centre. Else there's the Ubiquitous Chip http://www.ubiquitouschip.co.uk/ which is a real Glasgow institution in the West End, there's Oran Mor http://www.oran-mor.co.uk/, also in the West End.....
West End is less than 10 mins from city centre by cab....

There used to be a swanky place with a number (?) Devonshire Gardens. I often wonder if it's still there. Seemed like it was quite a way from the city center.

You're thinking of the restaurant at 1, Devonshire Gardens...not that far out. Used to be Amarylis, a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, then something else and now is a Hotel du Vin http://www.hotelduvin.com/glasgow/ very nice, but rather formal. And talking of formal, forgot the Chardon d'Or http://www.brianmaule.com/ in the city centre.

Rogano and the Chip spring to my mind.

In Ayr, I'd suggest leaving town...

Re Ayr: the obvious suggestion would be to visit the village of Alloway on the southern outskirts of Ayr. Even if you know little of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns, a visit to his birthplace to see the museums and the setting for some of his most famous poems would make an interesting day out.
