Glasgow Accomodation
 

Everyone's been so helpful about our June trip to Scotland that I'm posing a few specific Glasgow questions.

My family of three, including a fifteen year-old daughter, arrives from Inverness in central Glasgow on Friday the 29th of June. We leave for home on Sunday the 1st of July from Glasgow International.

I'm attempting to decide which area to stay in for this short stay. I have inquiries out to a couple of guesthouses/B&Bs, one which is near Pollock park and on Dumbreck Road.
When we arrive in Glasgow will it be a hassle to take public transportation to this area?
I also have an inquiry in to a B&B near Ashton Lane, an area that really looks appealing to me.

I don't have any real must sees for this area; as mentioned on my other post I would like to see the Burrell collection, but would like to come back into the city centre and do some sightseeing. I think that there is a hop on hop off bus, is this a good way to see the city? We have made reservations for the Willow Tea Rooms in Sauchiehall Street for Saturday afternoon; but this could be changed.

I'm assuming we will be taking a taxi to the airport. Any recommendations for this service?

Stay in the centre or the west end. I don't know much about Pollock, but I THINK there are some dodgy bits round there you might not want to be walking through late at night.

Your Ashton lane location is MILES better.

I carry an old business card for a taxi company in Glasgow in my wallet, but better to get your B&B to book it for you.

Nothing dodgy about the Dumbreck area. It's about as suburban middleclass as it gets. Nearest rail station is Dumbreck on the Paisley Canal line which runs half hourly service into Glasgow Central and takes about ten minutes. The B&B would probably be handy for the Burrell Collection but a bit limited for night life options. The West End offers more choice of entertainment, tourist sights and proximity to city centre via public transport.

Most likely Sheila. Pollok is a few miles away from there.

Dumbreck Road is handy for the Burrell collection and Pollok House but Ashton lane is more fun - get the tube to Byres road.
I would skip the Willow tearooms.Try the tearoom at Pollok House (the old kitchen in a national trust mansion in the same park as the Burrell collection - 5 min walk) or if you want a city centre C.R. Mackintosh building try Stereo in Renfield lane (mostly vegan) (near central station) or the Piping Centre (city, McPhater St. - hearty) or Ashton Lane has a million eateries nearby.
Cab - Hampden cabs 01416497777 cheap and reliable
There are open top tour buses with commentary - been running for years, seem popular.

The Burrell Collection is wonderful!
However, the Willow Tearooms were a huge let down - I'd so wanted to go but the whole experience was very poor including shoddy service and a croissant overcooked until it was literally black.

Avoid Willow Tea Rooms, lots of better tea experiences in Glasgow. Butterfly and Pig, Fifi and Ally or the Corinthian are all nice but my favourite is the Blythswood Hotel.
