Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt and then Venice

We are talking the Glacier Express from St. Moritz.on June 6. We are leaving for Venice on June 8 in the morning. We need advice, should we take the train all of the way to Zermatt or should we get off along the way and spend the night and the next day in one city and then go to Venice from there? I would like to take the Express as far as possible because I am really looking forward to the ride. I also would like to spend a full day in a smaller, town that has good restaurants and sightseeing. From that town we would leave for Venice on June 8.

Your help would be great.

Some people are going to tell you that instead of going from St. Moritz to Zermatt on the Glacier Express what you SHOULD do is go from St. Moritz to Tirano in Italy on the Bernina express.
I've done both and I think both are worth it for different reasons.

The "problem" if you can call it that is this: the trip up from Visp into Zermatt itself isn't all that spectacular according to some people. The trip either by rail or by cable car up to view the peak of the Matterhorn is something else again.

But Zermatt is kind of a typical ski village and the only "sightseeing" is probably that view of the Matterhorn.

THEN you end up doubling back to Visp and on to Brig and through the Simplon Tunnel and into Italy to Milan (eventually) where you are going to have to change for Venice; and be careful as to those timings out of Visp and brig because some of them will require not only a change in Milan but may also require another change further on.

Usually people who like alpine railways and wanting to end at Venice do the trip the other way round:
Zermatt - Glacier Express - Samedan (St. Moritz) - Zernez - Mals - Bolzano - Verona - Venice
or Bolzano - Bressanone - Brunico - Dobiacco - Cortina d'Ampezzo - Calalzo - Venice.
