Zagreb, rental car and Slovenia

We will be flying into Zagreb and touring Slovenia and Croatia for a month. I was thinking we would stay in Zagreb or a town nearby for a few days. Any suggestions on accomodations?? We like small inns, walkable to attractions if possible. Then I thought we'd rent a car and head into Slovenia - are there issues with crossing the border with a rental car that we need to consider? Was also wondering how to get to our first night's location from the airport? Thanks

Usually, cars rented in Croatia can easily go to Slovenia, without any problems (we got married in Slo last year and many of our friends flew o Zagreb, then crossed the border with the rented car).
For accommodation and sights in Slo, check www.slovenia.info, a very comprehensive website with plenty of info. A tiny medieval village close to the border on the Slovene side is Brezice, nearby there re the Terme Catez spa park, nice to visit in the summer.

I would just like to add that if you plan on driving on motorways or expressways in Slovenia, make sure you buy the toll sticker and affix it on your windshield beforehand otherwise you can be fined €150.

Take care especially if crossing at the main border crossing at Bregana, near Zagreb, that crossing is only accessible via motorway so you will need a toll sticker there. There is a service area right after the border crossing in Slovenia where you can buy it. If you drive further on without one you will be fined if caught.

Before we had to cut our trip short in 2010 we planned to stay in Samobor. It is a charming village very close to Zabreb. We found an assortment of accomodations there and parking wasn't going to be a problem when it can be in Zagreb.

I used Unirent for the car and found the price good and we could cross borders. So check them out because things could have changed since then.

Cross border is usually free of charge but just be aware that you have to buy a Slovene highway vignette (sticker) if you want to drive on a highways in Slovenia.

You can buy a weekly (15€) or monthly vignette (30€)

If it is not too late consider flying into Slovenia LJU which is a smaller easier airport than Zagreb. Also, your rental car will already have a vignette and this will save you Euros, highway toll costs and changing currency.
Lovely Lake Bled is about 25 minutes north on the A2

Don't rent from Hertz. We returned our car in May at the airport. There was no one at the counter so we used the drop box. We just received a bill for $1,000 dollars for scratches on the door. The car had no scratches when we returned it
