Giverny
 

Can someone tell me what Giverney is like in early April, when the tours begin? Are the flowers out yet? Thanks. <BR> <BR>Pete

It really depends on the weather. A long cold winter will delay the flowers somewhat but April should be OK. We did not go last April but We did go to Versailles & they were pretty but not great as they would be later. Go any way, the flowers are only part of the overall picture.

Even if there aren't a lot of flowers in April, there will be one big advantage -- it shouldn't be packed with other tourists! And the walk around the wonderful pond with the lilies and bridge will still be magnifique!

We will be in Paris May 6-11 and would like to visit Giverny but someone mentioned that to experience Giverny in a full glory we should go there early June which means we have to plan another trip. Should we go anyway? What Giverny is like in Early May? Thanks

I was there a few years back in early May and it was glorious. The azaleas were in full bloom, and the camelias were at the end of their bloom. The garden outside the house is always in bloom with seasonal flowers. Enjoy - and bring lots of film.

I went for the first time in April several years ago. Assuming the weather has been okay, what you will see are the bulbs-- spectacular tulips, etc. Some of the tulip blooms were four inches tall! There were no roses whatsoever, so the arbors looked a little barren, but it was still wonderful. <BR> <BR>Last year we went back in June, and I saw the waterlilies for the first time, and no tulips. It was a completely different but still a wonderful visit.

Remember, it's closed on Monday, the day we were there. Walked back to town on a small pathway, in a drizzle. That is one of our favorite memories.

I agree with all the above, very high on my list of day trips out of Paris. You dont really need to take a tour. Save the money and have a memorable adventure on your own. The train to Vernon leaves the central Paris station about every hour. When you get to Vernon, grab a city bus right at the train station for a very inexpensive ride to Monets front door. Its easy, just look around and follow the rest of the tourists. Dont be shy about asking directions from the locals, they are great. We spent the entire trip under our umbrellas (April) and didnt mind a bit. E-mail my address if you want more details.

Giverny is worth a visit at any time. I have visited at every season and each has something to offer. It has something special.

Always be sure to bow down to the man with the hailer while at Giverny. He is only trying to do his job.
