Giuseppe di Stefano still in critical condition

I'm quite distressed to read that Giuseppe di Stefano is still in critical condition after the brutal, near fatal attack against him in Kenya several weeks ago. He arrived this evening in Milan for further emergency treatment in the neurological ward of the San Raffaele Hospital.

Di Stefano had one of the most exquisite tenor voices of the 20th century, perhaps the most sensual ever recorded.

Let's hope he recovers.

Yes, it was a terrible thing to happen to him, an old man and his wife, attacked like that. Very sad.

I had not heard that. One of my first opera recordings was di Stefano singing Che gelida manina from La Boheme.

I still have that old scratchy 45 rpm relic.
Fortunately, digital remasterings exist!!

I had not heard that. Here's a more detailed account than most: http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/12-5-2004-62558.asp

This has been a bad month for some of opera's greats--Renata Tebaldi just died. Let's hope Steffano makes it.

Di Stefano was moved to a hospital in Italy; he remains in a coma, unfortuantely.

Not good at all. Sounds like a pretty mean subdural hematoma or extensive brain damage. Perhaps Rex will give us a better medical assessment from the somewhat sketchy information available.

The latest information from the Italian media this morning is that Di Stefano's condition is still "guarded" but is improving slowly. He remains in intensive care.
