I have been having trouble getting the English addition for searching for Gites in the Dordogne and Lot - I click the english on the top left but any descriptions for gites that come up are in French.

I'm not positive as I haven't used it a lot, but I don't think they have the descriptions translated into English in many cases (maybe all, not sure). I don't think there is anything you can do. I think it is run by region or department, and many of them don't translate the descriptions. I guess they don't have the manpower to do that. I think only the interface is in English.

Like Christina said, it is run by department - and the proprietor might even be the person responsible for translation. I just looked at a bunch of Gites in Brittany, and they all had English translations.

I think it's because Provence and the Loire are more tourist-oriented, and have been longer. In Brittany and Provence, I think there are a lot of English owners, also, and the British go there a lot for holiday.

The above URL with the uk in it is only the interface, and I used it also and could get nothing but French in the areas you seek, also (like Lot).

The Dordogne is loaded with Brits. I can't understand why they have not translated the descriptions for that department.

Gites de France is the biggest gites directory, but by no means the only one; nor is it an "official" site - indeed the organisation was taken to court in 2006 for abuse of dominant position, and fined ten thousand euros.

If you want descriptions in English, use one of the English-language gite rental sites such as http://gitelink.com or http://gite.com, where you'll find a lot of gîtes run by English-speaking owners
