Girona

Hi all.
We are travelling to Europe in a couple of months, and will end up in Girona for 4 nights in early June.
(We are travelling only using public transport).
We intend to visit the Cathedral and museum, the Jewish Quarter, Girona art museum, walk the walls and just generally meander for a couple of days. Is there anywhere you can suggest that we could visit via public transport to fill in one of the days? A lot of the day tours that appeal, look to leave from Barcelona, and we are heading there next.
We do enjoy walking, water based activities, history, and art. I was thinking about a day trip to the coast perhaps? Any wee villages, that are on public transport that are within easy reach? Or even better.....is there something a bit off the radar in Girona itself you have done. (We do enjoy biking, but most of the tours I see there are for pros, not our fitness levels! )
The idea was to have a place to rest and recover as well will have been away from home for 2.5 weeks before we get to Girona. ( Possibly could have chosen somewhere different, but hey-ho! )

Thanks for any ideas. ( It was reading the Girona trip report of one of you that inspired me to go there in the first place! )

If you like historic mysteries there's a fine series set in Girona in the times of the Moors. The protagonist is a blind Jewish doctor, and it's fascinating to see how the cultures in Girona interact. The books are unfortunately out of print now, but you can get them by checking for Caroline Roe on the used-book sites.

What a shame they are no longer in print. too expensive to ship to my country however. If only I could read German....they are on the kindle

Check the TEISA bus schedules for options such as San Feliu de Guixols on the coast or Besalu with its unusual circus museum and miniatures museum. Figueres by train for Dali fans.
But don’t be too quick to dismiss cycling. There are shops that will rent you the bikes, then TEISA’s Bici-bus will transport you home from San Feliu after you’ve cycled there on an easy greenway, or transport you up to Olot for an only very slightly sportier ride back to Girona, also along a greenway, that is to say, a former rail bed.

There is a lovely medieval village close to Girona called Peratallada. I highly recommend this for a day trip. We had a car so it was easy to get to. It really is lovely.

I would try to see the castellers (human towers.) One team in the Girona area are the Marrecs de Salt, on their calendar they have something going on June 3 and 4. But I’m not sure what exactly that is.. they call it Colònies Marreques. If those dates work, you could write to them ask if that is a public demonstration. They are a very good team. https://marrecs.cat

if you can’t see castellers in Girona, see them in Barcelona. They are incredible. The calendar is here:

Girona is criss-crossed with safe bike lanes, has multiple pathways going radially out to a circular ( long way out) ring path ( partially gravel). I felt very safe cycling there. Or there is a Greenway.

Thanks everyone, that gives me some options.

I just booked our bikes for September in Girona!!! We are riding for 3 days, we ride here at home in Michigan, very flat where we are so I was a little intimidated. One day we will get dropped off from Girona to Olot and then ride down on the Greenway to Girona and the next day we will ride down to San Feilu de Guixols and then get picked-up and driven back to Girona. We are booked for the transportation through Cycle Tours Catalonia. Just a little information if you want to check it out :)
Enjoy your trip!!!!

Unfortunately the museum of miniatures disappeared when the Circus museum was inaugurated (they occupy the same building). Anyway, the Circus museum is also interesting. With the Teisa bus you can easily visit Besalú. It has a beautiful historic center and you can walk along the banks of the river. In fact, I would recommend visiting Besalú for half a day and Banyolas for another half day (both linked by Teisa to Girona). Banyoles has a spectacular lake and a historic center rarely visited by tourists but very beautiful. If you need anything I'm from Besalú
