Palenque -

You've piqued my interest....

Would you happen to know if the Grindelwald bus runs in April, and if so where it leaves from?

We'd already planned to visit the Gorge of the Aare Meiringen as it opens March 29.

We stayed in Gimmelwald 4 nights last summer and LOVED it. It's quiet, peaceful and very scenic but a short distance from other villages and places of interest.

We stayed at Esther's. She has several bedrooms off a large dining/kitchen/living room but she also has two apartments. One downstairs has a patio area but it isn't private. The upstairs apartment (B) has it's own private balcony with fabulous mountain views.

I hope to get to go to Gimmelwald again and again.

Rick Steves is the expert on Gimmelwald and has suggestions for other places to stay and lots of good info about the area.

Well we bought the airline tickets for the first week in september. Obviously we are getting very excited. Hopefully the weather will be good in the BO. We plan on spending a day or two in Zurich too. This may sound weird but we wanted to go around the 15th but choose the first week so it would coincide with a full moon. So maybe the evening walks will be a little brighter. All of your tips have been great. I would love to hear more.
Thanks
J

melan - have not looked at this official web site yet but even if there is a schedule for April note that the pass at Grosse Scheidegg could always be blocked by snow - so early buses should have the note subject to conditions.

Thanks Palenque. I'll take a look and send a few e-mails.

Well it looks from the schedule it only runs from late May thru Sept - about right because the summer tourist season does not really start until around June - Apr and May being a slack season in between winter ski and summer hiking - many hotels are closed in April and May even - owners often go on vacation IME because of the slack (there are plenty open however)

BTW - the 2009 Switzerland by train, bus and boat brochure of the Swiss Travel System shows that the Jungfrau train from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch is only 25% off with Swiss Passes - the map indicates it.

Cheers

J---for hiking, there are some great ones listed and described on the Gimmelwald websites. Some originate there, some in Mürren. If you describe the type of hike you like (length in time and distance, and elevation gain or losss) I can help sort them out for you.

If you are there for the full moon---somewhere I saw dates that they were doing guided hikes in the moonlight from Schynige Platte. I don't know if they extended into September, but I'll try to find the information. But if it is clear that night, even the walk from Mürren to Grutschalp and back on the path should be spectacular, with the moonlight on the peaks across the way.

Why in the world do you even want to go to Gimmelwald other than to pass through it!!

Connie Mar 23rd, 2009 06:30 PM

bob_brown, with all due respect, you just don't get it. Why in the world do you even want to talk someone out of something that many people truly enjoy?

enzian Mar 23rd, 2009 07:43 PM

I believe they have decided to stay in Mürren. . . .

jlm43 Mar 24th, 2009 01:45 AM

Because a tourist trap filled city just isn't for me. That is why I didn't take my friends recommendation and take a carribean cruise. And if come September, most people feel the way Bob-Brown does, and they pass on Gimmelwald and Murren, hooray for me. It will be that much more peaceful.

In my experience, Sept is a very busy time in the BO.

Palenque -

Just heard back from the Grindelwald bus company - most are indeed not running, but the village buses from Grindelwald to Oberer Gletscher and Grindelwald to Itramen are running.

Anything worth looking into on those two routes?
