Gift for a French baby

What could I buy in the US to take to France for a couple with a new baby? Nothing with writing on it, should be suitable for boy or girl, $20 apx. If I could find it at Target or a department store chain, that would be great. Thanks.

A semi automatic rifle.

Seriously we always give clothes for newborns. Or a toy.

Give them anything, they are too young to be as judgemental as their parents.

There are so many nice baby stores in France, so not sure how to choose something from the U.S. I like this one:

This was kinda cute too as long as there are no choking hazards and it isn't too big for your travel bag.

do not get clothes with an American flag on it, I'm not sure if that was a joke or not

It was not a joke, why would it be? The OP is from the U.S. It seems appropriate to bring something that is significant to the U.S. Is there some shame in that??

Otherwise, just wait until you arrive in France and buy something here.

1994 raises a good point, there are many shops in Paris with quality baby clothes.

Good grief, no to the Trump idea. Honestly, if the OP had been from Canada, I might have suggested a similar gift with a Canadian theme... or Japanese them, or Mexican theme, etc.

Just buy whatever is your favorite baby gift. A Boppy is popular and several young women I know like those wraps that go around the body and hold the baby. That would be easy to pack.

Some stimulating ideas here, things I never would have thought of. Who knows, they may come in handy in the future.

I admit I'm clueless when it comes to baby gifts. I haven't bought one in years and I've never bought one for a French baby. Since we don't get to Paris and I've never seen a baby shop where we usually go in France, I would have to shop at a hypermarche, and their stuff is not really gift-worthy.

I'm leaning toward a lightweight blanket if I can find a very very nice one. I'm still open to your suggestions.

Chances are good that the baby will already have piles of nice blankets, since that's an easy gift to purchase.

Sophie le Giraffe is the traditional French baby toy - everybody gets one at birth. You can order it through ToysRUs/BabiesRUs in the United States. Non-toxic, the rubber giraffe is great for teething and appropriate for boys or girls. There are more options for "Sophie" gifts, and you can enter the child's name in her Birthday Club, too.

I like to give a Christmas tree decoration, "Baby's First Christmas" type of thing, with the year.

Some are quite beautiful, and it's sure to be kept as a nice memento of the giver.

How about something along these lines?

I used to buy music boxes in France for American friends' kids, and they seemed to love them.

Classy. Full of taste
My communist grandfather always said that the Russian had to cope with 2 thirds of the German army.
So maybe a U.S. Flag on front and a soviet one I the back ?
