Ghost tours in Edinburgh

I am planning a trip to Scotland in May and had read a posting on this page mentioning a ghost tour in Edinburgh. I would appreciate any information on this.
I am also looking for information on local hangouts. We want to listen to some music-maybe rock and folk, jazz if it is available.

There were several different outfits giving ghost tours when we visited. However, we were very disappointed (i.e., it was kind of stupid and cheesy) . In retrospect, we wished we had gone to a show, as last minute tickets were available and little more than the ghost tour. Many big name productions were in town when we were there and some other tourists we talked to the next morning said they absolutely loved the show.

Thank you Martin for the information. I will look into some shows and see what I can find.

Terra,We went on one of the ghost tours .I would agree it is a bit touristy but I thought it was fun.I would not put it on a "must do list"but if you have a free evening avalible it may be fun. Many folk acts appear in the pubs on Haymarket or Grassmarket street.I would suggest going to at least one. There is no charge other than the cost of your pints.Enjoy.HV.

Didn't take a ghost tour, but did fall for one of those scary-looking placards advertising something like "dungeon" or "crypt" tours. It was around 11:00 in the morning and I had some time to kill before hitting the pubs and the tour lasted only an hour and was just about to start, so I decided, what the heck.

It was a short tour by some sort of a preservation group (they weren't in it just for the money) of a group of stone rooms underneath a bridge (I don't remember the name) that hadn't really been completely excavated. While there were no ghosts, it was pretty interesting (and sometimes scary) to see how people lived in these very dark and very small rooms centuries ago. According to the guide, these people would work all day in very dim oil lights and not really come out to see the light of day very much.

I was sure to find a bright pub with plenty or windows for my lunch.

I took a ghost tour in Edinburgh about 9 years ago and let me tell you, the thought that 9 years have passed since then is far scarier to me than anything on the tour! That said, I would highly recommend it. The one I took (sorry, I don't remember the name, but it was listed in Let's Go Europe) was very interesting from a historical perspective. I will never forget the story of an entire building during the plague years - like something out of Poe, but it really happened.
